Martlets duo receive rugby all-star status

MONTREAL - Two members of the McGill women's rugby team - Amandra Mongeon of Île-Bizard, Que., and Melany Waring of Dorval, Que., - have been named to the Quebec University Rugby League all-star team.

Mongeon, a 5-foot-10 flanker, was selected for the third consecutive year. The 21-year-old arts and science junior previously played for the Canadian under-20 team.

Waring is a 5-foot-2 scrum-half, who also earned all-star honours in 2007. She is a 25-year-old senior, majoring in health and education.

The all-conference team included five players from first-place Laval, four members of the Concordia Stingers, two from Ottawa and one from Bishop's. Laval fullback Claudiane Renaud Trois-Rivières, Que., was voted player of the year, while rookie-of-the-year honours went to Concordia's Hughanna Gaw of Elgin, Que. Bishop's garnered two major awards, with Frances Bajdik-Bova of Ottawa receiving the conference's nod for best combining academics with athletics and citizenship. Gaiters head coach Eryn Hessian was named coach of the year.

The Stingers travel to Ste. Foy, Que. to meet the Laval Rouge et Or in the conference championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
