Redmen Football vs Bishop's ("Fill the Stadium Night")

MONTREAL -- Senior running back Jamall Lee of Port Coquitlam, B.C., ran for a Quebec-record 391 yards and tied another with four rushing touchdowns as Bishop's dumped McGill 45-21 in Quebec University Football League action before 6,218 at Molson Stadium, Friday.

It was believed to be the largest home crowd for a McGill home game since Oct. 13, 1962, when 11,203 saw the Toronto Varsity Blues defeat McGill 19-13.

Despite the spirited fan interest in the first annual "Fill the Stadium" promotion, you knew it was going to be a rough day at the office for the Redmen, who trailed 7-0 before Bishop's touched the ball on offence.

After McGill's opening drive sputtered, Steven Turner returned a punt 64 yards for the opening score at 1:41 of the first quarter.

After that, it was all Lee, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound tailback, who smashed the previous single-game record of 298 yards, held since 1969 by McGill's Dave Fleiszer, and was just four yards short of the CIS record of 395, by Calgary's Chris Lewis. Lee also set league records for most carries (35) and all-purpose yards (405) in a game. With a career total of 3,642 yards, Lee eclipsed the QUFL career rushing mark, and now sits 207 yards ahead of Sherbrooke's Joseph Mroué, who currently has 3,435 yards heading into the weekend.

The game was never in doubt as Bishop's led 14-0 after one quarter, 35-7 at the half and 42-14 after three stanzas. Both teams combined 950 net yards, including 577 to the Gaiters, who had 484 on the ground.

For McGill, quarterback Matt Connell was 39-for-58 for 334 yards, one interception and three touchdowns. Connell, who has reached the 300-yard plateau 21 times in a McGill jersey, now has 58 career TDs to match the Quebec record held by Laval's Mathieu Bertrand. Connell's 39 completions also set a QUFL single-game record, surpassing his previous mark of 38.

He used seven different receivers but his favourite targets were the usual suspects – Charles-Antoine Sinotte and Erik Galas.

Sinotte, a junior from Trois-Rivieres, who led the CIS in receptions last year, hauled in 13 balls for 97 yards and one TD. Galas, a fifth-year senior from Ottawa, caught 10 for 122 and a TD.

McGill's other major score was by Tim Kraemer, a fifth-year senior from Terrebonne, Que., who had two receptions for 17 yards.

McGill (0-3) travels across town next week to play the Montreal Carabins, while Bishop's (1-2) will host Sherbrooke.

REDMEN RAP: There was an ominous tone in the air before the game as freshman kicker Austin Anderson, the son of NFL great Gary Anderson, was scratched just after the pre-game warm-up. It appeared that he aggravated a hip injury while practicing long field goals… McGill did not attempt a field goal in his absence and Sebastian Saunders, a rookie from Rye, N.Y., handled all the kicking duties but was not called on to attempt a field-goal… He averaged 40.6 yards over five kickoffs, 34.5 on 11 punts and was 3-for-3 in converting touchdowns… McGill dressed 20 freshmen on their 45-man dress list for the game, one short of the team record established in Week 1 of the season… Freshman Mario La Valle of Montreal had his first start at middle linebacker and had one interception, to go along with 5.5 tackles… Veteran DB Anthony Lukca of St. Laurent, Que., who led the nation in tackles last year, was tops on the Redmen with 9.5… Rookie LB Marc-Etienne Vien was credited with a forced fumble when he blocked a punt late in the third quarter at the Bishop's 42-yard line, which he ran back to the Bishop's 7, setting up a TD toss to Sinotte on the next play… Vien was also credited with two solos and a pair of assisted tackles…Rookie DL Kyle Nash of Ottawa, had 2.5 tackles, including his first QB sack in CIS play.
