QUEBEC CITY –The No-1 ranked Laval Rouge et Or scored eight touchdowns and routed McGill 67-8 before 11,332 at PEPS Stadium, Saturday.

It was a result that had no bearing on the final standings in the Quebec University Football League but was a pretty meaningful affair for a game that was essentially meaningless. The events of the day had a huge effect on the record books as seven CIS national standards fell, along with eight QUFL marks.

Laval went undefeated at 8-0, while the Redmen finished winless at 0-8, for an unprecedented second straight year. The Rouge et Or will host the fourth-place Montreal Carabins (5-3) in one semifinal next Saturday, while second-place Concordia (5-3) will host Sherbrooke (5-3) in the other. 

McGill quarterback Matt Connell of St. Bruno, Que., accounted for 11 of those records, establishing CIS and QUFL single-season standards for most passing attempts (336) and completions (209), tying the mark previously held by Calgary's Greg Vavra (336 in 1982) and breaking the record by Queen's grad Tommy Denison (203 in 2003), respectively. Connell, who was playing in his 38th and final CIS game, established CIS and QUFL career records for most attempts (1,364), completions (816) and yards (10,455). Connell also finished with a QUFL career record 63 TD tosses, the seventh-highest total in CIS history.

In the game, Connell, who was sacked seven times, completed 22 of 33 attempts for 254 yards and one touchdown toss to Erik Galas, a senior from Ottawa. Galas, who caught only four balls for 33 yards, ended up with national and conference records for most receptions in a career (194).

Laval pivot Benoit Groulx ran an offence that generated 624 net yards, compared to McGill's 194. He completed 18 of 22 attempts for 261 yards and a two-yard TD pass to Mathieu Picard.  Groulx established CIS and league single-season records for highest passing percentage (75.2), breaking a mark that stood since 1962 by Alberta's Garry Moore (70.4).

Laval kicker Christopher Milo nailed three field goals (41, 39, 25) to give him 25, establishing CIS and league single-season records, two more than Manitoba's Jamie Boreham in 2001. Milo finished the campaign with 117 points, breaking the league mark of 101 held since 1989 by Ottawa's Cam Baird.

Laval Sebastien Levesque had three carries for 104 yards, including a 67-yard TD romp early in the third quarter, which put the Rouge et Or ahead 41-6. Rounding out the scoring for Laval was Guillaume Allard-Cameus (with five-and one-yard TD runs), Cesar-Roberto Sanchez (a pair of one-yard runs), Samuel Fournier (one-yard run) and Maxime Berube, who picked off back-up pivot Ryne Bondy for a 31-yard interception return. Each team also had one safety.

The only other bright note for McGill was receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte, wh caught six passes for 104 yards. The Redmen, who dressed 22 freshmen, finished the campaign without attempting a field goal in their last seven games. They had opened the campaign two months ago with a 5-for-5 field-goal performance from rookie kicker Austin Anderson, son of NFL kicking legend Gary Anderson, who sustained a season-ending groin injury in Week 2.
