MONTREAL -- Pierre-Alexandre Renaud of Laval, Que., and Brianna Miller of Pte. Claire, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 27, 2013.
Renaud, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound sprinter on the men’s swim team, won a pair of gold medals, along with a silver and bronze en route to collecting 572 points on the FINA scale and earning male swimmer-of-the-meet honours at the second Coupe de Quebec swim meet, hosted by McGill on Saturday.
The 22-year-old economics senior and team captain saved his most spectacular performance for the 200-metre freestyle, where he blew away the field, posting a time of one minute, 52.22 seconds, almost three seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Renaud finished second in the 400 individual medley (4:38.49) and was third in the 100 butterfly (56.95). He capped off the day's performances by guiding the 4x100 freestyle relay squad to a first-place time of 3:29.96. He registered at McGill in 2010 after graduating from College Vieux-Montreal.
Miller, a 22-year-old physical education senior on the women’s rugby team, scored 16 points and won Game MVP honours as McGill upset division-leading Concordia 41-34 to capture the RSEQ championship last Friday.
The speedy 5-foot-6 back scored one try, converted four others and added a penalty goal as McGill advanced to the CIS championship, in Quebec City, for the first time since 2005. Miller, a first-team all-star who led the Quebec conference in scoring and was named league MVP, has accounted for 33 of McGill’s 68 points scored in two playoff contests. She joined the Martlets in 2010 after graduating from John Abbott College.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
