MONTREAL – Swimmers
Katie Caldwell of White Rock, B.C., and
Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Feb. 10, 2013.
Caldwell, an 18-year-old freshman who is majoring in elementary and secondary education, was named as the RSEQ conference rookie and swimmer of the year at the Quebec university championships over the weekend in Quebec City. The 5-foot-9, middle-distance specialist merited conference all-star status, smashed two league and McGill records en route to winning three gold medals, one silver and a pair of bronzes. She claimed both the 200m and 400m individual medleys, completing the races in 2:11.20 and 4:37.01, respectively, erasing the previous RSEQ marks of 2:14.09 and 4:40.93. She also struck gold in the 200m butterfly, clocking in at 2:16.04. Caldwell, who recently returned to competitive swimming after a six-month hiatus to recharge her batteries, enrolled at McGill last fall out of Earl Marriott secondary school.
Bielby, a 23-year-old master's student in electrical engineering, won five medals and earned all-conference honours at the Quebec university championships last week. He reachied CIS qualifying standards while helping the Redmen finish second overall. The 5-foot-9, 155-pound freestyle and IM specialist captured gold in 200m individual medley in 2:04.40. He also finished atop the podium in the 400m IM, touching the wall in a time of 4:27.14. In addition, Bielby claimed bronze medals in the 200m butterfly (2:02.64), the 4x100m freestyle relay (3:28.08) and the 4x200m free relay (7:36.20). The fifth-year veteran is a product of John Abbott College.
Each athlete will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
