Avery Cadogan of Winnipeg, Man., and
Frederique Potvin from Ste. Julie, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Aug. 20, 2017.
Cadogan, a 6-foot-5, 176-pound guard, scored a team-leading 61 points in four contests and grabbed 18 rebounds with eight steals and five assists as McGill posted a 3-1 record in preseason play against four NCAA teams in an international trip to San Jose, Costa Rica last week. The Redmen defeated Kent State 85-79 (Aug. 14), lost 57-50 to Lamar University (Aug. 15), then posted back-to-back victories over Texas - El Paso (UTEP), winning 56-54 and 86-82 in overtime, Aug. 16-17.
The 21-year-old economics senior, posted a career-high 30 points in the win over Kent State, including a single-game school record with eight treys. He shot a sizzling 69 per cent from the field (20/29), 68 per cent from the arc (15/22) and dropped six of nine from the line.
Potvin, a 5-foot-11 guard in her second year at McGill after playing three seasons at the University of Pittsburgh, scored a career-high 25 points as the Martlets opened their 96th season with a 68-66 exhibition victory over Iona College, an NCAA Div. 1 squad, at Love Competition Hall, Sunday. Potvin, a 24-year-old social work senior whose previous best was 20 points in a game at the Nationals last spring, also contributed seven rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocks. She shot 10-for-17 from the field with a nifty 5-for-8 effort from three-point range.
