MONTREAL – Synchronized swimmers
Alyssa Malli of Vancouver, B.C., and
Marion Burnichon, from Briançon, in France, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 26, 2017. There was no male nominee.
The dynamic duo each collected a pair of gold medals as McGill came from behind to win the Geraldine
Dubrule Trophy as champions of the Canadian University Synchronized Swim League, a two-day meet that concluded Sunday in the Cote St. Luc Community Centre. It marked McGill's fourth consecutive
CUSSL national title and
14th overall in 16 years since the league was formed in 2001-02.
Alyssa Malli, an 18-year-old arts freshman and
Marion Burnichon, a 19-year-old physics sophomore teamed up to win the novice duet category, then helped guide the novice team routine to victory.
The
Martlets won the title by the slimmest of margins, finishing first of 15 teams to capture the two-day competition with 50 points to edge out second-place Ottawa, which registered 48. It was the second closest margin of victory in CUSSL history, behind a one-point win for UPEI over McGill in 2012.
McGill athletes of the week receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
