MONTREAL –
Claire Vercheval of St. Julie, Que., and
Samuel Tremblay of St. Hubert, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 8, 2017.
Vercheval, a 6-foot-2 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored 48 points in 11 sets over three games last week as McGill went undefeated at the RMC Invitational tournament in Kingston. The 21-year-old physical and health education freshman registered 35 kills, 11 service aces and a pair of stuff blocks. She added 33 digs, a 39 per cent kill rate, a 23 per cent kill efficiency and a 1.90 passing ratio (out of 3). A product of Collège Edouard-Montpetit, she enrolled at McGill this season.
Tremblay, a 5-foot-11, 171-pound forward with the hockey Redmen, scored three goals, as sixth-ranked McGill swept a pair of road games at Windsor last week. The 20-year-old physical education freshman scored once in Friday's 4-0 victory and added two more in Saturday's 5-0 win. A product of College de Saint Jerome, he played in the QMJHL for Gatineau prior to joining the Redmen.
