MONTREAL --
Melanie Myrand and
Francois Jarry, a pair of distance runners from Lachine, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Sept. 18, 2016.
Myrand, a 5-foot-3 senior with the cross-country Martlets, won gold and led McGill to a first-place finish of 24 schools at the McGill Open meet, held at Mount Royal Park, Saturday. The 5-foot-3 senior ran the four-kilometre course in 14 minutes, 24.8 seconds, finishing 22 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor to lead the 277-runner field. Myrand, a 30-year-old graduate student in nursing, was voted RSEQ conference athlete of the year last season. A product of John Abbott College, she previously graduated from McGill in 2010 with a science degree but returned last year to further her education.
Jarry, a six-foot physical education senior who runs for the Redmen, also struck gold at the McGill Open meet last weekend. The 22-year-old completed the six-kilometre circuit in 19:05 to finish first of 280 runners, winning the race by two seconds. Jarry's efforts guided the McGill men to a second-place finish in the 24-team field. He attended College Andre-Laurendeau prior to enrolling at McGill in 2013.
