MONTREAL – Hockey players David Rose of St. Hubert, Que., and Melodie Daoust, from Valleyfield, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 29, 2015.

Rose, a 5-foot-8, 212-pound right-winger,  scored five points in two victories as the No.2-ranked Redmen defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks and Queen’s Gaels, last Friday and Saturday, respectively. After collecting a pair of assists, including one on the winning tally in a 7-3 win over UOIT, the 24-year-old economics senior was in on every goal in a 3-2 road victory at Queen’s. He assisted on McGill’s first goal to tie the game at 1-1, then tallied a pair third period markers in the last five minutes of play, including the game-winner with just 50 seconds left in regulation time. His five-point weekend moved him into second place in the CIS scoring race with 26 points in 15 games. A 2010 graduate of College Edouard-Montpetit, Rose played in the QMJHL for Baie Comeau, Cape Breton and Montreal before joining McGill.

Daoust, a 5-foot-6 centre with the Martlets, scored the game-winner and added a couple of assists as McGill rallied for 3-2 victory over division-leading Ottawa in a key RSEQ women's hockey contest played at McConnell Arena, Sunday, extending the team’s win streak to four. The 23-year-old physical education senior assisted on McGill’s first goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the opening period, assisted on the next marker to give McGill a 2-1 lead midway through the second and then snapped a 2-2 draw with the winning tally at 10:14 of the third stanza. It marked her seventh multi-point performance in nine league games. Daoust, the team captain, now leads the RSEQ conference scoring race with 14 points, including five goals. She is ranked ninth in the CIS national scoring race but is first in points per game. Also a product of College Edouard-Montpetit, Daoust helped Canada win gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

McGill athletes of the week receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
