MONTREAL – Hockey players
Cedric McNicoll of Boucherville, Que., and
Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 15, 2015.
McNicoll, a 26-year-old management junior majoring in accounting, scored eight points in three playoff games as No.6-ranked McGill defeated Concordia 2-1 in the OUA best-of-three quarter-final series last week. The 5-foot-10, 186-pound centre had one assist in a 6-4 loss in Game 1 last Wednesday, added a goal and four helpers in a 5-0 win on Friday and scored once while setting up another goal in Sunday's 6-3 series-clinching victory. McNicoll enrolled at McGill in 2012 after playing pro in the AHL and ECHL. He previously starred with Shawinigan in the QMJHL
Daoust, a 5-foot-6 forward, scored six points, including a pair of goals, in two games last week. She tallied twice and collected an assist as No.2-ranked McGill blanked Carleton 10-0 last Friday, then assisted on the final three goals of a 6-3 upset over the No.1-Montreal Carabins last Sunday. It marked the first two games of the season for the 23-year-old physical education junior who won gold with the Canadian Olympic team in Sochi and just returned to the lineup from a six-month rehabilitation period, recovering from a knee injury suffered last August. Daoust is a product of College Edouard-Montpetit.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
