Naomie Lo of Toronto and
Hazem Issa, a native of Cairo, in Egypt, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 18, 2024.
Lo, a 21-year-old software engineering junior, was named female athlete of the meet after scoring 797.5 points, as the McGill women's swim team captured the RSEQ university championship in Quebec City over the weekend.. The 5-foot-2 middle distance specialist won five gold medals and a silver. She claimed individual gold medals in the 800-metre freestyle (8:46.47), the 400 free (4:16.92) and the 200 butterfly (2:14.95). In the morning prelims, she broke a school record in the 200 fly, where she was clocked in 2:14.51, erasing the mark of 2:14.89 set in 2020. In addition, Lo helped win a pair of relay golds, in the 4x100 free (3:49.61) and the 4x200 free (8:21.48). Her silver medal finish was in the 200 free (2:02.67).
Issa, a 21-year-old civil engineering junior, was named male athlete of the meet after scoring 792.5 points, as the McGill men's swim team captured the RSEQ university championship in Quebec City over the weekend. The 6-foot-5, 212-pound sprinter won five gold medals and a silver. He won the 50-metre freestyle (22.61) and 50m butterfly (24.21). He also guided McGill to victory in three relays, the 4x50 medley (1:38.60), the 4x100 medley (3:38.65) and also in the 4x50 free (1:29.09), which set both McGill and RSEQ conference records. His silver medal performance occurred in the 100 free (49.68).
