MONTREAL – Baseball’s
Brad Marelich of Pasadena, Calif., and soccer’s
Sophie Guilmette of Montreal are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 15, 2023.
Marelich, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound shortstop with the men’s baseball team, posted a team-leading .833 batting average as McGill swept a playoff doubleheader over Concordia last Saturday, winning 11-1 and 4-0, to claim a Quebec university best-of-three semifinal series 2-0. The 20-year-old economics junior had five hits in seven at bats, including three doubles, and drew one walk. He also scored four runs and had two runs batted in. Marelich is a product of Flintridge Preparatory School in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.
Guilmette, a 5-foot-6 goalkeeper with the women's soccer team, registered a 0.50 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage with one shutout as McGill battled to a pair of draws last week. A 22-year-old master’s student in kinesiology and physical education, Guilmette made seven saves on eight shots in a 1-1 stalemate against Laval, then ren registered a two-save shutout in a scoreless draw against UQAM on Sunday. Guilmette is a product of Vanier College who went on to graduate from NCAA's Vanderbilt University before transferring to McGill in 2022.
