Julien Pouliot a McGill student from Boucherville, Que., was among 19 rowers named by the CIS Thursday to compete for Canada at the 2015 FISU Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea (July 3-14).

The sport was also part of the program in 1987 (Zagreb, Yugoslavia - now Croatia), 1989 (Duisburg, Germany), 1993 (Buffalo) and 2013 (Kazan, Russia). Canada did not field a team two years ago but had amassed 19 medals over the first three competitions, five of them gold (all in 1993).
The team selections, made by the Canadian University Rowing Association, include 11 men and eight women. Brock University leads the way with seven team members, followed by Western with four.
Pouliot, who measures 6-foot-1 and 162 pounds, will compete in the lightweight single sculls. He just completed his first year of a certificate in applied marketing at McGill after earning an undergrad degree at Laval. He
previously graduated from Collège Edouard-Montpetit in 2010.Previously, McGill rowers have claimed four medals at the FISU Games, including gold medalist
Rachel Starr in the lightweight double sculls (1993) and
Derek Porter, who won two silvers (1993) and a bronze (1989).
Joining Pouliot in the men's lineup is
Matt Fournier (Carleton) and
Matt Christie (Queen's), both of Ottawa, in the lightweight double sculls;
Tom Watson of Winnipeg (Victoria/Oxford),
Taylor Ashwood of Fort Erie, Ont. (Brock),
James Potts of Ottawa (Brock) and
Josh King of Ottawa (Trent) in the lightweight four;
Mark Alm of Grimsby, Ont. (Brock) and
William Bryden of Hubley, Ont. (Brock) in the double sculls; as well as
Liam McCormick of London, Ont. (Western) and
Zach Lewis of Ottawa (Brock) in the men's pair.
On the women's side, the roster includes
Alexandra Stefanovski of London (Western) and
Katherine Walker of Hamilton (Brock) in the lightweight double sculls;
Catherine Multari of LaSalle, Ont. (Western) and
Stephanie Mowder of St. Catharines, Ont. (Brock) in the double sculls; and
Emily Jago of Sudbury, Ont. (Laurentian),
Elizabeth McConnell of St. Albert, Alta. (Victoria),
Jessie Loutit of Yellowknife (Western) and
Chloe DeRoche of Calgary (Queen's) in the women's four.
The red and white contingent will be led in South Korea by a trio of experienced coaches, including
Ed Fournier from Carleton University,
Amanda Schweinbenz from Laurentian and
Daniel Bechard from Western.
The rowing competition will run from July 5-7 in Chungju, just over 200 kilometres north-east of Gwangju.
NOTES: At the 2014 Canadian University Rowing Championships last November in Victoria, Western claimed its second straight women's team title while Brock finished third in the men's standings... Eight Canadian rowers who reached the Universiade podium during their career captured Olympic gold in 1992 in Barcelona. The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years and is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.

Universiades d'été 2015
Les avironneurs canadiens de retour aux jeux de la FISU 26 juin 2015
OTTAWA (SIC) – Sport interuniversitaire canadien a dévoilé vendredi l'équipe canadienne d'aviron pour les Universiades d'été de 2015 qui se dérouleront à Gwangju, en Corée du Sud (3 au 14 juillet).

La discipline faisait également partie du programme en 1987 (Zagreb, Yougoslavie – aujourd'hui Croatie), 1989 (Duisbourg, Allemagne), 1993 (Buffalo) et 2013 (Kazan, Russie). Le Canada n'a pas pris part à la compétition il y a deux ans, mais avait amassé 19 médailles lors des trois premières éditions, incluant cinq d'or (toutes en 1993).
Dix-neuf étudiants athlètes sélectionnés par l'Association canadienne d'aviron universitaire porteront le maillot unifolié en Corée du Sud, soit 11 hommes et huit femmes. L'Université Brock mène la charge avec sept représentants, Western suivant avec quatre.
L'alignement masculin inclut

La compétition d'aviron se déroulera du 5 au 7 juillet à Chungju, à un peu plus de 200 kilomètres au nord-est de Gwangju.
NOTES: Aux championnats canadiens universitaires d'aviron de 2014 qui ont eu lieu en novembre dernier à Victoria, Western a remporté un deuxième titre par équipe consécutif chez les dames, alors que Brock terminait troisième au classement masculin... Huit avironneurs canadiens ayant atteint le podium aux Universiades au cours de leur carrière ont remporté des médailles d'or aux Olympiques de 1992 à Barcelone. Les Universiades sont ouvertes à tous les compétiteurs âgés entre 17 et 28 ans l'année des Jeux et qui sont des étudiants à temps plein dans une institution d'enseignement postsecondaire (université, collège, Cégep) ou ont complété leurs études dans une institution postsecondaire au cours de l'année précédant l'événement.
