OTTAWA – The McGill University rowing team won five events and finished second in the standings as the 101st year of the program opened Sunday at the 52nd annual Head of the Rideau Regatta at Mooney's Bay Beach.
The long-course competition on the Rideau River attracted 311 entries from 33 rowing clubs, with most events contested over five kilometres.
McGill collected 40 points in the battle for the Kandahar Trophy, finishing three behind Ottawa, which won the team title with 43. Trent University was third with 37. The trophy has been awarded since 2009 to the university that accumulates the most points across all events at the competition. McGill previously claimed the Kandahar title in 2025, 2024, 2017 and 2016.
"Our coaching staff is incredibly proud of the team," said Stephanie Marchand, head coach of the McGill program which rowed its first ever race in 1926. "They showed strong team spirit and dedication to their performances in tough racing conditions with a strong cross-headwind, and it showed with some great results and close finishes.
"It's always a fun regatta for the athletes to kick-start our racing season, and I cannot wait to see what comes next."
The Martlets and Redbirds combined for five victories and produced several close finishes, including a pair of runner-up performances in the varsity eights.
McGill swept the men's and women's varsity double events. Sarah Birtulescu and Maria Fletcher won the women's race in 23:48.6, ahead of Trent (24:05.5) and Carleton (24:27.6). On the men's side, Thomas Barcza and Edison Luke crossed first in 21:31.2, followed by boats from Trent (22:08.1) and Carleton (22:46.9).
Arthur Casalis and Rand Ripple added a third doubles victory for McGill, winning the men's lightweight varsity event in 21:37.7. Carleton was second in 22:00.5 and Trent third in 22:46.7.
The McGill women's junior varsity coxed four also claimed gold. Coxie Ella Wilson and Coral Zhu, Nora Cunningham, Cassidy Devereaux and Isabel Burns finished in 24:05.4, ahead of Trent (24:59.0) and Carleton (25:29.3).
The fifth victory came from the Redbirds novice eight over a three-kilometre course. Wilson served as coxswain for Lucas Richards, Jeremy Dube, Ian Benkoczi, Patrick Hunter, Aaron St. Louis, Alex Kerr, Shoham Zuker and James Escott, who won in 14:09.8. Dawson College was second in 16:11.1 and Ottawa third in 16:24.6.
Lily Dinwoodie came within eight seconds of adding another victory, placing second in the women's varsity single in 26:16.0 behind Ottawa (26:08.0).
The Redbirds varsity eight missed the top step of the podium by just 1.5 seconds. Coxswain Naia Kolodziej and Thomas Barcza, Oliver Snoxell, Jonathan Cucci, Tristan Boudreau, Theo Pafitis, Kyler Bellamy, Taivan Everett and Edison Luke finished in 19 minutes, 25.4 seconds, just behind Trent (19:23.9). Ottawa was third in 20:25.8.
The Martlets varsity eight was similarly close, finishing 3.3 seconds behind Ottawa. Coxie Olivia Saw and Fletcher, Birtulescu, Lily Dinwoodie, Julia Milosz, Lindsay Scott, Kaelin Vasseur, Molly Curd and Charlotte Baudin clocked 21:07.2. Ottawa won in 21:03.9, while Trent was third in 21:43.6.
McGill's other podium finishes included silver in the women's varsity coxed four. Saw guided Milosz, Scott, Vasseur and Curd to a time of 22:54.7, only 5.8 seconds behind Ottawa's winning crew (22:48.9).
Thom Martens was second in the men's lightweight varsity single in 23:52.0 and joined Ripple, Clement Le Scellier and Casalis, with Zoe Halstead as coxie, to place second in the men's lightweight varsity coxed four in 20:54.0.
Emily Cao and Julia Macintosh added a runner-up finish in the women's junior varsity double, clocking 29:07.9 behind Carleton (26:28.0).
The Martlets novice eight also earned silver over the three-kilometre course. Halstead and Emma Zgenona, Paige Duncan, Holly Parady, Capucine Parvery, Claudia Llado, Arowyn Fitzpatrick, Tzeviya Keller and Adhara Collins Scholten finished in 16:45.3, behind Ottawa (16:30.9) and ahead of Dawson College (20:00.8).
McGill added two bronze-medal performances. Marwa Benchabane placed third in the women's lightweight varsity single in 26:50.0 and teamed with Baudin for third in the women's lightweight varsity double in 25:30.7.
Snoxell finished fourth in the men's varsity single in 23:15.7.
The Redbirds were also fourth in the men's varsity coxed four. Kolodziej, Everett, Boudreau, Cucci and Pafitis clocked 22:14.4 despite an incident involving the bow that left them racing the course without a fin.
The second of four scheduled competitions for the McGill crew is the Head of the Trent regatta in Peterborough, Ont., on Oct. 3.

OTTAWA — L'équipe d'aviron de l'Université McGill a remporté cinq épreuves et terminé au deuxième rang du classement général, dimanche, à l'occasion de la 52e édition du Head of the Rideau, disputée à la plage de la baie Mooney.
Cette compétition sur longue distance, tenue sur la rivière Rideau, a réuni 311 embarcations représentant 33 clubs d'aviron. La plupart des épreuves se déroulaient sur un parcours de cinq kilomètres.
McGill a récolté 40 points dans la course au trophée Kandahar, soit trois de moins que l'Université d'Ottawa, championne avec 43 points. L'Université Trent a pris le troisième rang avec 37 points.
Décerné depuis 2009, le trophée Kandahar revient à l'université qui accumule le plus de points dans l'ensemble des épreuves de la compétition. McGill l'avait remporté en 2025, 2024, 2017 et 2016.
« Notre personnel d'entraîneurs est extrêmement fier de l'équipe, a déclaré Stephanie Marchand, entraîneuse-chef du programme d'aviron de McGill, qui a disputé sa toute première course en 1926. Nos athlètes ont fait preuve d'un formidable esprit d'équipe et de beaucoup de détermination dans des conditions difficiles, notamment avec un fort vent de travers et de face. Cela s'est traduit par d'excellents résultats et plusieurs arrivées très serrées.
« C'est toujours une régate agréable pour lancer notre saison de compétition et j'ai très hâte de voir ce qui nous attend. »
Les Martlets et les Redbirds ont cumulé cinq victoires et signé plusieurs résultats serrés, notamment deux deuxièmes places dans les épreuves universitaires de huit.McGill a par ailleurs balayé les honneurs des épreuves universitaires de deux de couple chez les hommes et les femmes.
Sarah Birtulescu et Maria Fletcher ont remporté l'épreuve féminine en 23:48,6, devant Trent (24:05,5) et Carleton (24:27,6). Chez les hommes, Thomas Barcza et Edison Luke se sont imposés en 21:31,2, suivis de Trent (22:08,1) et de Carleton (22:46,9).

Le quatre de pointe avec barreur universitaire junior féminin de McGill a également décroché l'or. La barreuse Ella Wilson et Coral Zhu, Nora Cunningham, Cassidy Devereaux et Isabel Burns ont terminé en 24:05,4, devant Trent (24:59,0) et Carleton (25:29,3).
La cinquième victoire de McGill est venue du huit masculin novice, disputé sur une distance de trois kilomètres. Wilson était à la barre de l'équipage composé de Lucas Richards, Jeremy Dube, Ian Benkoczi, Patrick Hunter, Aaron St. Louis, Alex Kerr, Shoham Zuker et James Escott, qui l'a emporté en 14:09,8. Le Collège Dawson a pris le deuxième rang en 16:11,1 et Ottawa, le troisième en 16:24,6.
Lily Dinwoodie est passée à huit secondes d'ajouter une autre victoire à la récolte de McGill. Elle a terminé deuxième du skiff universitaire féminin en 26:16,0, derrière Ottawa (26:08,0).
Le huit universitaire masculin des Redbirds a raté la victoire par seulement 1,5 seconde. La barreuse Naia Kolodziej et Thomas Barcza, Oliver Snoxell, Jonathan Cucci, Tristan Boudreau, Theo Pafitis, Kyler Bellamy, Taivan Everett et Edison Luke ont franchi la ligne d'arrivée en 19 min 25,4 s, tout juste derrière Trent (19:23,9). Ottawa a terminé troisième en 20:25,8.
Chez les femmes, le huit universitaire des Martlets a connu un scénario semblable, terminant à seulement 3,3 secondes d'Ottawa. La barreuse Olivia Saw et Maria Fletcher, Sarah Birtulescu, Lily Dinwoodie, Julia Milosz, Lindsay Scott, Kaelin Vasseur, Molly Curd et Charlotte Baudin ont enregistré un chrono de 21:07,2. Ottawa l'a emporté en 21:03,9, devant McGill et Trent (21:43,6).
Parmi les autres podiums de McGill, le quatre de pointe avec barreur universitaire féminin a décroché l'argent. Saw a dirigé Milosz, Scott, Vasseur et Curd vers un chrono de 22:54,7, à seulement 5,8 secondes de l'équipage gagnant d'Ottawa (22:48,9).
Thom Martens a terminé deuxième du skiff universitaire masculin des poids légers en 23:52,0. Il a également uni ses efforts à Ripple, Clement Le Scellier et Casalis, avec Zoe Halstead à la barre, pour prendre le deuxième rang du quatre de pointe avec barreur universitaire masculin des poids légers en 20:54,0.
Emily Cao et Julia Macintosh ont ajouté une deuxième place au deux de couple universitaire junior féminin, avec un chrono de 29:07,9, derrière Carleton (26:28,0).
Le huit novice des Martlets a également remporté l'argent sur le parcours de trois kilomètres. Halstead, Emma Zgenona, Paige Duncan, Holly Parady, Capucine Parvery, Claudia Llado, Arowyn Fitzpatrick, Tzeviya Keller et Adhara Collins Scholten ont terminé en 16:45,3, derrière Ottawa (16:30,9) et devant le Collège Dawson (20:00,8).
McGill a aussi récolté deux médailles de bronze. Marwa Benchabane a terminé troisième du skiff universitaire féminin des poids légers en 26:50,0, puis a fait équipe avec Baudin pour prendre le troisième rang du deux de couple universitaire féminin des poids légers en 25:30,7.
Snoxell a terminé quatrième du skiff universitaire masculin en 23:15,7.
Les Redbirds ont également pris le quatrième rang du quatre de pointe avec barreur universitaire masculin. Kolodziej, Everett, Boudreau, Cucci et Pafitis ont enregistré un chrono de 22:14,4 malgré un incident à la proue qui les a contraints à parcourir l'ensemble du tracé sans dérive.
La deuxième des quatre compétitions prévues au calendrier de McGill sera la régate Head of the Trent, le 3 octobre à Peterborough, en Ontario.
