TORONTO — Joseph Ianniello scored a power-play goal at 3:20 of overtime as the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold edged McGill 4-3 in OUA preseason men's hockey at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday morning.
The loss capped a gruelling turnaround for the Redbirds, who had less than 13 hours to recover from Friday night's 2-1 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in a 10-round shootout. McGill finished its six-game preseason schedule with a 3-3 record, with four contests requiring overtime and/or a shootout.
The Redbirds twice took the lead in a back-and-forth opening period. Justin Boisselle opened the scoring at 10:04 before Marko Djordjevic replied for TMU just 73 seconds later.
Charles-Thomas Larochelle restored McGill's advantage at 19:19, but Ryan Cooper pulled the Bold even just 39 seconds later to send the teams into the first intermission tied 2-2.
Djordjevic, who finished with two goals and an assist, gave TMU its first lead at 7:58 of the second period.
McGill captain Charles-Antoine Dumont forced overtime with a short-handed goal at 5:04 of the third. It was his second goal of the preseason.
The deadlock held through regulation before McGill rookie Matheas Stark was assessed a high-sticking penalty at 2:17 of overtime. Ianniello capitalized 63 seconds later to end the game.
TMU held a 33-26 advantage in shots and went 1-for-2 on the power play, while McGill was 0-for-3.
Rookie Ryan Parker saved 20 of 33 shots and went the distance in the McGill net, while Mason Beaupit played the entire game for TMU and kicked aside 23 of 26.
The rare 11:30 a.m. start marked McGill's first mornig affair since March 17, 2024, when the Redbirds defeated TMU 3-2 at the Mattamy Centre to claim bronze at the U SPORTS national championship.
It also may have been McGill's final game in Toronto for many years. The Redbirds are entering their 40th and final season in the OUA before joining the new RSEQ men's hockey league next season. The move will return McGill to a Quebec-based conference for the first time since the old Quebec Universities Athletic Association folded following the 1986-87 season.
Saturday's loss dropped McGill's lifetime record against the TMU/Ryerson franchise to 46-13-1.
McGill now has nearly two weeks to prepare for its OUA regular-season opener against the visiting Nipissing University Lakers from North Bay, Ont., on Saturday, Oct. 10 in a 3 p.m. faceoff at McConnell Arena. The Redbirds will make the short jaunt across town the following evening to face crosstown rival Concordia at 7 p.m. The opener is the official kickoff for plans to celebrate the team's 150th anniversary of its first-ever game played on Jan. 31, 1877.
REDBIRDS RAP: Dan Jacob and David Urquhart, both former McGill team captains and coaches, were spotted behind the Montreal Canadiens bench for the second time in the NHL preseason. The most recent occurrence was on Saturday (Sept. 26) with the Habs playing simultaneous split-squad games against the Senators in both Ottawa and Montreal. A similar situation happened earlier in the week when the Canadiens played simultaneous split-squad games against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In both instances, Jacob was behind the bench in one game, while Urquhart was coaching in the other game.... Now that the Habs preseason schedule is over, the McGill alumni tandem will be returning to their coaching roles with the AHL's Laval Rocket...
Meanwhile, new McGill bench boss Jocelyn Perreault used the preseason to evaluate a young roster featuring 15 newcomers — 13 freshmen and two transfers — along with six sophomores, four juniors and four seniors... Boisselle and Larochelle shared the team lead in preseason scoring with five points apiece. Boisselle registered three goals and two assists in five games, while Larochelle had two goals and three helpers. Ten different Redbirds found the back of the net.

TORONTO — Joseph Ianniello a marqué en avantage numérique à 3:20 de la prolongation pour permettre aux Bold de l'Université métropolitaine de Toronto (TMU) de vaincre McGill 4-3, samedi matin, dans un match préparatoire de hockey masculin des SUO au Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Ce revers a conclu un difficile revirement pour les Redbirds, qui disposaient de moins de 13 heures pour récupérer après leur victoire de 2-1 contre les Varsity Blues de Toronto, vendredi soir, à l'issue d'une séance de tirs de barrage de 10 rondes. McGill a terminé son calendrier préparatoire de six matchs avec une fiche de 3-3, quatre de ces rencontres ayant nécessité une prolongation et/ou une fusillade.
Les Redbirds ont pris les devants à deux reprises au cours d'une première période fertile en rebondissements. Justin Boisselle a ouvert la marque à 10:04, avant que Marko Djordjevic ne réplique pour TMU à peine 73 secondes plus tard.
Charles-Thomas Larochelle a redonné les devants à McGill à 19:19, mais Ryan Cooper a créé l'égalité seulement 39 secondes plus tard. Les deux équipes ont ainsi retraité au vestiaire à égalité 2-2 après 20 minutes.
Djordjevic, qui a terminé la rencontre avec deux buts et une passe, a procuré à TMU sa première avance du match à 7:58 de la deuxième période.
Le capitaine de McGill, Charles-Antoine Dumont, a forcé la tenue d'une prolongation en marquant en désavantage numérique à 5:04 du troisième engagement. Il s'agissait de son deuxième but du calendrier préparatoire.
L'impasse a persisté jusqu'à la fin du temps réglementaire avant que la recrue de McGill Matheas Stark n'écope d'une pénalité pour bâton élevé à 2:17 de la prolongation. Ianniello en a profité 63 secondes plus tard pour mettre fin au match.
TMU a dominé 33-26 au chapitre des tirs au but et a fait mouche une fois en deux occasions en avantage numérique. McGill a été blanchi en trois supériorités numériques.
La recrue Ryan Parker a repoussé 20 des 33 tirs dirigés vers lui et disputé toute la rencontre devant le filet de McGill. Mason Beaupit a également été d'office pendant tout le match pour TMU et a bloqué 23 des 26 tirs auxquels il a fait face.
Le rare départ à 11 h 30 marquait le premier match matinal de McGill depuis le 17 mars 2024, lorsque les Redbirds avaient défait TMU 3-2 au Mattamy Athletic Centre pour remporter la médaille de bronze au championnat national de U SPORTS.
Il pourrait également s'agir du dernier match de McGill à Toronto avant plusieurs années. Les Redbirds amorcent leur 40e et dernière saison dans les SUO avant de rejoindre la nouvelle ligue masculine de hockey du RSEQ la saison prochaine. Ce changement ramènera McGill dans un circuit québécois pour la première fois depuis la disparition de l'ancienne Association athlétique universitaire du Québec à la suite de la saison 1986-1987.
La défaite de samedi a porté la fiche à vie de McGill contre la franchise TMU/Ryerson à 46-13-1.
McGill dispose maintenant de près de deux semaines pour se préparer à son match d'ouverture de la saison régulière des SUO contre les Lakers de l'Université Nipissing, de North Bay, en Ontario. La mise au jeu est prévue le samedi 10 octobre à 15 h à l'aréna McConnell.
Les Redbirds feront le court trajet à travers la ville le lendemain pour affronter leurs rivaux montréalais de Concordia à 19 h. Le match d'ouverture donnera officiellement le coup d'envoi aux célébrations entourant le 150e anniversaire du tout premier match de l'équipe, disputé le 31 janvier 1877.
ÉCHOS DES REDBIRDS : Dan Jacob et David Urquhart, tous deux anciens capitaines et entraîneurs de McGill, ont été aperçus derrière le banc des Canadiens de Montréal pour une deuxième fois au cours du calendrier préparatoire de la LNH. La plus récente occasion est survenue samedi (26 septembre), alors que les Canadiens disputaient simultanément deux matchs avec des formations divisées contre les Sénateurs, l'un à Ottawa et l'autre à Montréal. Une situation semblable s'était produite plus tôt dans la semaine lorsque le Tricolore avait disputé deux matchs simultanés contre les Maple Leafs de Toronto. Dans les deux cas, Jacob se trouvait derrière le banc pour l'un des matchs tandis qu'Urquhart dirigeait dans l'autre… Le calendrier préparatoire des Canadiens étant maintenant terminé, les deux anciens de McGill reprendront leurs fonctions d'entraîneurs avec le Rocket de Laval, dans la Ligue américaine…
Par ailleurs, le nouvel entraîneur-chef de McGill, Jocelyn Perreault, a profité du calendrier préparatoire pour évaluer une jeune formation comptant 15 nouveaux venus — 13 recrues et deux joueurs transférés — ainsi que six étudiants de deuxième année, quatre de troisième année et quatre de quatrième année… Boisselle et Larochelle ont terminé à égalité au sommet des marqueurs de l'équipe pendant le calendrier préparatoire avec cinq points chacun. Boisselle a inscrit trois buts et deux passes en cinq matchs, tandis que Larochelle a récolté deux buts et trois mentions d'aide. Au total, 10 joueurs différents des Redbirds ont trouvé le fond du filet.
