TORONTO — It took 67 minutes of hockey, 20 shooters and 10 rounds of a marathon shootout before McGill finally outlasted the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 in OUA preseason men's hockey at Varsity Arena on Friday.

The Redbirds also won the shootout portion 2-1, prevailing in the 10th round to improve their preseason record to 3-2. The result improved McGill's lifetime head-to-head record to 92-121-15 against U of T, dating back to their first rendezvous way back in 1899.

The shootout equalled the fourth-longest in OUA history as mcGill extended its win streak to 10 over the Varsity Blues in this, their only scheduled meeting for 2026-27.

McGill captain Charles-Antoine Dumont scored the Redbirds' lone goal in regulation, while Thomas Gangl replied for Toronto. The teams were tied 1-1 after 60 minutes and remained deadlocked following a seven-minute overtime period.

Goaltender Nicolas Ruccia delivered another strong performance for McGill, stopping 37 of 38 shots over 67 minutes before backstopping the Redbirds with an additional nine saves through the lengthy shootout. Toronto netminder Eric Young was also solid, turning aside 29 of 30 shots in regulation and overtime, in addition to eight more in the shootout.

McGill drew first blood midway through the opening period after Toronto's Dylan Wightman was sent off for interference at 9:33.

The Redbirds needed only 35 seconds to capitalize. Dumont converted the power play at 10:08, with Jeremie Payant and Charles Boutin drawing assists, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Toronto pulled even at 8:55 of the second period when Gangl scored at even strength, assisted by Rylee Hlusiak and Christian Stevens.

That would be the last goal scored during conventional play as the goaltenders took over from there.

McGill also had to survive a crucial penalty kill in overtime after Boutin was whistled for hooking at 5:01. Toronto failed to convert, sending the game to the shootout.

In the prolonged shootout, rookie Hudson Cummins scored on McGill's first attempt before Toronto's Christian Stevens netted the equalizer on the Blues' second attempt. The deadlock continued until Redbirds rearguard Igor Mburanumwe found the back of the net on McGill's 10th attempt to end the marathon.

Toronto finished with a 38-30 advantage in shots. McGill went 1-for-2 on the power play and killed off all four Toronto opportunities with the man advantage.

The Redbirds will have little time to savour the victory.

McGill has less than 13 hours to recover before returning to action Saturday in a rare morning encounter against the TMU Bold. Puck drop is slated for 11:30 a.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, formerly known as Maple Leaf Gardens.

After that, the Redbirds will head to the Rogers Centre to catch a Toronto Blue Jays game against the Cincinnati Reds at 3 p.m. before making the six-hour trek back to Montreal along Highway 401.

Toronto, which dropped to 1-2 in preseason play, will return to Varsity Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m. to host the MacEwan University Griffins of Edmonton, a member of the Canada West conference.

REDBIRDS RAP: After the game, the Redbirds hosted a Friends of McGill Hockey alumni reception that featured some two dozen grads at a nearby establishment… Among the former McGill players spotted in the crowd was Oscar Carsley, Brandon Skubel, Gianluca Curcuruto, Emanuel Vella, Andrew Wright, Jake Jarvis, Adam Shell, Greg Frazer, Patrick Kelly, Andrew McIntyre, William Rouleau, Drew Bennett, Mitchell Prowse and Evan Patrician... The current team also spent Friday morning touring the Hockey Hall of Fame, which features numerous artifacts from McGill. The university will soon celebrate the 150th anniversary of its first organized hockey game, played on Jan. 31, 1877… The OUA record for the longest shootout is 13 rounds (26 shooters), set when Western defeated visiting McGill 5-4 on Feb. 2, 2025, with the Mustangs prevailing 1-0 in the shootout… Two games have required 11 rounds (22 shooters): Western's 6-5 home victory over Waterloo on Feb. 6, 2009, when the Mustangs won the shootout 3-2, and Ottawa's 4-3 road victory over Nipissing on Dec. 1, 2012, when the Gee-Gees prevailed 2-1 in the shootout… Ruccia has now allowed only two goals over his last two preseason starts, stopping 83 of 85 shots in victories over UNB and Toronto.

Les Redbirds se rendront ensuite au Rogers Centre pour assister à 15 h au match de baseball entre les Blue Jays de Toronto et les Reds de Cincinnati, avant d'entreprendre le trajet de six heures vers Montréal sur l'autoroute 401.

Toronto, qui a vu sa fiche préparatoire passer à 1-2, sera de retour à l'aréna Varsity samedi à 19 h pour accueillir les Griffins de l'Université MacEwan, d'Edmonton, une formation de l'association Canada West.

ÉCHOS DES REDBIRDS : Après le match, les Redbirds ont tenu une réception des Amis du hockey de McGill réunissant quelque deux douzaines d'anciens joueurs dans un établissement voisin… Parmi les anciens joueurs de McGill aperçus dans la foule figuraient Oscar Carsley, Brandon Skubel, Gianluca Curcuruto, Emanuel Vella, Andrew Wright, Jake Jarvis, Adam Shell, Greg Frazer, Patrick Kelly, Andrew McIntyre, William Rouleau, Drew Bennett, Mitchell Prowse et Evan Patrician...  L'équipe actuelle a également profité de la matinée de vendredi pour visiter le Temple de la renommée du hockey, où sont exposés de nombreux artéfacts liés à McGill. Dans quelques mois, l'Université soulignera le 150e anniversaire de son premier match de hockey organisé, disputé le 31 janvier 1877… Le record des SUO pour la plus longue séance de tirs de barrage est de 13 rondes (26 tireurs), établi lorsque Western a défait McGill 5-4 à domicile le 2 février 2025, les Mustangs remportant la fusillade 1-0… Deux rencontres ont nécessité 11 rondes (22 tireurs) : la victoire de 6-5 de Western à domicile contre Waterloo, le 6 février 2009, alors que les Mustangs avaient remporté la fusillade 3-2, et le gain de 4-3 d'Ottawa à Nipissing, le 1er décembre 2012, les Gee-Gees s'imposant 2-1 en tirs de barrage… Ruccia n'a accordé que deux buts à ses deux derniers départs du calendrier préparatoire, repoussant 83 des 85 tirs auxquels il a fait face dans des victoires contre UNB et Toronto.
