SHERBROOKE, Que. — Estella Irvine scored twice and goalkeeper Anna Demarbre earned her first career shutout as the McGill Martlets blanked the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 2-0 in RSEQ women's soccer action Sunday.

The victory improved McGill's record to 3-2-1 and moved the Martlets into a second-place tie with Laval (3-1-1) in the eight-team Quebec conference. The Rouge et Or holds a game in hand.

Irvine, a 19-year-old physics junior from Toronto, scored her first two career goals, both on redirections in front of the net, with fellow Toronto native Zahra Metivier supplying the playmaking on each marker.

McGill wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Irvine struck in just the third minute, converting a long pass from Metivier on the right flank for what stood as the game-winning goal.

The combination clicked again for an insurance marker in the second half.

Metivier, a fleet-footed forward who transferred to McGill after four seasons at Bishop's, raced down the right sideline and cut around a Sherbrooke defender before spotting Irvine slipping past an unsuspecting defender and into the box. Metivier delivered the pass and Irvine redirected it home for her second goal of the afternoon.

At the other end, Demarbre made the lead stand up in her second consecutive start for the Martlets. The first-year graduate student, who transferred from the University of Calgary after four seasons with the Dinos, recorded the first shutout of her McGill career.

Sherbrooke goalkeeper Alexandrine Noel took the loss but was selected as the Vert & Or player of the game. Poppy Honeybone earned game MVP honours for McGill.

The Martlets were assessed three of the game's four yellow cards. Honeybone, Georgia Baldwin and Harper Nelson were cautioned for McGill, while Sherbrooke assistant coach Fred Lenart received the other warning.

The Vert & Or return to action Sept. 24 when they travel to Trois-Rivieres to face UQTR. McGill returns home to host cross-town rival Concordia at Percival Molson Stadium, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.

SHERBROOKE, Qué. — Estella Irvine a marqué deux buts et la gardienne Anna Demarbre a signé le premier jeu blanc de sa carrière alors que les Martlets de McGill ont blanchi le Vert & Or de Sherbrooke 2-0, dimanche, dans un match de soccer féminin du RSEQ.

Cette victoire a permis à McGill de porter sa fiche à 3-2-1 et de rejoindre Laval (3-1-1) au deuxième rang de la conférence québécoise à huit équipes. Le Rouge et Or a toutefois un match en main.

Irvine, une Torontoise de 19 ans en troisième année de physique, a inscrit les deux premiers buts de sa carrière, tous deux sur des redirections devant le filet. Sa compatriote torontoise Zahra Metivier a orchestré les deux séquences.

McGill n'a pas tardé à ouvrir la marque. Irvine a frappé dès la troisième minute en redirigeant une longue passe de Metivier provenant du flanc droit. Le but s'est finalement avéré celui de la victoire.

Le tandem a récidivé pour inscrire un but d'assurance en deuxième demie.

Metivier, une rapide attaquante qui s'est jointe à McGill après avoir disputé quatre saisons avec Bishop's, a filé le long de la ligne de touche droite avant de contourner une défenseure de Sherbrooke. Elle a ensuite repéré Irvine, qui s'était faufilée derrière une défenseure prise au dépourvu pour pénétrer dans la surface de réparation. Metivier lui a acheminé le ballon et Irvine l'a redirigé au fond du filet pour son deuxième but de l'après-midi.

À l'autre bout du terrain, Demarbre a protégé l'avance à son deuxième départ consécutif devant le filet des Martlets. L'étudiante de première année aux cycles supérieurs, qui a été transférée de l'Université de Calgary après quatre saisons avec les Dinos, a ainsi récolté le premier jeu blanc de sa carrière à McGill.

La gardienne de Sherbrooke Alexandrine Noel a encaissé la défaite, mais a été choisie joueuse du match du Vert & Or. Poppy Honeybone a reçu le même honneur du côté de McGill.

Les Martlets ont écopé de trois des quatre cartons jaunes décernés au cours de la rencontre. Honeybone, Georgia Baldwin et Harper Nelson ont été averties du côté de McGill, tandis que l'entraîneur adjoint de Sherbrooke Fred Lenart a reçu l'autre carton.

Le Vert & Or reprendra l'action le 24 septembre en rendant visite aux Patriotes de l'UQTR à Trois-Rivières. McGill sera de retour à domicile pour accueillir son rival montréalais Concordia au stade Percival-Molson, avec un coup d'envoi prévu à 18 h.
