ST. JOHN'S, NL — Women's flag football will become a pilot sport in U SPORTS beginning in the 2027-28 season, marking another significant milestone in the continued growth of the sport across Canada.
The announcement was made Wednesday during the U SPORTS annual meetings in St. John's, N.L.
The addition will increase the number of U SPORTS national championships to 24, including 13 on the women's side, while creating a pathway toward a future national university championship in women's flag football.
The announcement comes as McGill prepares for its inaugural varsity season in women's flag football. The university announced in mid-May the appointment of Philip Cutler as head coach of the program, which will compete in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) beginning this fall. McGill joins Concordia, Montréal, Sherbrooke, Laval, Bishop's, Carleton and Ottawa among Canadian universities sponsoring the sport at the varsity level.
Women's flag football has experienced rapid growth in Canada in recent years. Since 2022, Football Canada has organized the Canadian Collegiate Flag Football Championship, which featured 11 teams in 2026. The sport has also gained momentum through its inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, while participation rates continue to rise nationwide. Women's flag football has been a varsity sport in the RSEQ conference since 2021 and currently includes eight participating institutions.
"This announcement marks an important milestone for university sport in Canada," said Matthew Davies, chief sport officer at U SPORTS. "As the sport continues to gain momentum at the grassroots, university and international levels — including its debut at the 2028 Olympic Games — this is an exciting opportunity to create new competitive pathways for student-athletes and further expand opportunities for women in sport."
The pilot sport designation provides a framework for emerging sports to develop national competition opportunities in partnership with national sport organizations. Under the U SPORTS model adopted in 2023, pilot sports retain that status for five seasons while competition standards and championship requirements are developed.
"The adoption of women's flag football as a pilot sport by U SPORTS is a landmark moment for our game and for the future of sport in Canada," said Jo-Anne Polak, chair of Football Canada. "This decision creates a clear pathway for thousands of young women to continue their football journey from community fields to university competition and beyond."
Details regarding qualification procedures, participating institutions and the dates and location of the inaugural Football Canada/U SPORTS Women's Flag Football Championship will be announced at a later date.

ST. JOHN'S, T.-N.-L. — Le flag-football féminin deviendra un sport pilote au sein de U SPORTS à compter de la saison 2027-2028, marquant une nouvelle étape importante dans la croissance continue de cette discipline au Canada.
L'annonce a été faite mercredi dans le cadre des assemblées annuelles de U SPORTS tenues à St. John's, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador.
L'ajout du flag-football féminin portera à 24 le nombre de championnats nationaux de U SPORTS, dont 13 chez les femmes, tout en ouvrant la voie à la création éventuelle d'un championnat universitaire canadien dans cette discipline.
Cette décision survient alors que McGill se prépare à disputer sa première saison au niveau universitaire en flag-football féminin. L'université a annoncé à la mi-mai la nomination de Philip Cutler au poste d'entraîneur-chef du programme, qui amorcera sa première campagne au sein du Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) dès cet automne. McGill rejoint Concordia, Montréal, Sherbrooke, Laval, Bishop's, Carleton et Ottawa parmi les universités canadiennes qui offrent ce sport au niveau universitaire.
Le flag-football féminin connaît une croissance rapide au Canada depuis plusieurs années. Depuis 2022, Football Canada organise le Championnat canadien collégial et universitaire de flag-football, qui a réuni 11 équipes en 2026. La discipline a également gagné en popularité depuis son ajout au programme des Jeux olympiques de 2028 à Los Angeles, tandis que les taux de participation continuent d'augmenter partout au pays. Le flag-football féminin fait partie du programme sportif universitaire du RSEQ depuis 2021 et regroupe actuellement huit établissements.
« Cette annonce représente une étape importante pour le sport universitaire au Canada », a déclaré Matthew Davies, chef du sport à U SPORTS. « Alors que le flag-football continue de gagner en popularité aux niveaux local, universitaire et international — notamment grâce à ses débuts aux Jeux olympiques de 2028 — il s'agit d'une occasion exceptionnelle de créer de nouveaux parcours compétitifs pour les étudiantes-athlètes et d'élargir davantage les possibilités offertes aux femmes dans le sport. »
Le statut de sport pilote offre un cadre permettant aux disciplines émergentes de développer des occasions de compétition nationale en partenariat avec les organismes nationaux de sport. En vertu du modèle adopté par U SPORTS en 2023, les sports pilotes conservent ce statut pendant cinq saisons, le temps d'établir les normes de compétition et les critères requis pour la tenue d'un championnat national.
« L'adoption du flag-football féminin comme sport pilote par U SPORTS constitue un moment historique pour notre discipline et pour l'avenir du sport au Canada », a affirmé la présidente de Football Canada, Jo-Anne Polak. « Cette décision crée un parcours clair permettant à des milliers de jeunes femmes de poursuivre leur cheminement dans le football, des terrains communautaires jusqu'au sport universitaire et au-delà. »
Les procédures de qualification, les établissements participants ainsi que la date et le lieu du premier Championnat féminin de flag-football Football Canada/U SPORTS seront annoncés ultérieurement.
