STE. FOY, QUE — Daniella Mbengo scored 18 points off the bench as second-seeded McGill University upset division-leading Laval 51-45 to capture the RSEQ women's basketball championship Saturday at the Amphithéâtre Desjardins inside the Centre PEPS.
The victory marked McGill's first provincial banner since 2018 and the 14th in program history. It was Laval's first home-court loss in 10 games against a Quebec league opponent this season.
McGill, which improved to 16-9 overall, led 16-12 after the opening quarter and 29-22 at halftime. Laval trimmed a 34-22 deficit to 36-32 through three quarters and pulled even at 36-36 early in the fourth.
The Martlets regained control midway through the final frame. Mbengo scored on back-to-back possessions to give McGill a 45-39 advantage with just over four minutes remaining. Laval closed within two late, but McGill sealed the outcome at the foul line. Katie Rathwell sank two free throws with eight seconds left to extend the lead to 51-43.
The 51 points scored by the Martlets was the lowest tally for a winning team in the RSEQ final since 2013 when McGill defeated Concordia 51-49.
In a defensive battle throughout, McGill shot 28.3 per cent from the field (15-for-53) but controlled the glass and delivered at the free-throw line when it mattered most. The Martlets outrebounded Laval 43-38 and went 18-for-25 from the stripe.
Laval, which dropped to 19-6 overall, struggled offensively against McGill's tight defence, shooting just 21.2 per cent (14-for-66) from the floor and 5-for-27 from three-point range. The Rouge et Or led the league in treys with an average of 8.9 per game.
Mbengo led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-19 shooting in 25 minutes. Emilia Diaz-Ruiz, who was playing with a facial shield after suffering a broken nose in the semifinal win over Bishop's two days earlier, anchored the interior with a team-high 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards, while adding six points. She went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Lily Rose Chatila contributed nine points and five rebounds, while Emma-Jane Scotten added seven points and pulled down nine boards.
Sabrine Khelifi paced Laval with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Brinly Holt, the team's leading scorer, was held to just eight points, while Léa-Sophie Verret chipped in seven.
McGill finished with 13 second-chance points compared to Laval's eight and held the Rouge et Or to 13 points in the fourth quarter.
With Laval hosting the upcoming U SPORTS Final 8 championship in Quebec City, both teams had already secured national berths. However, McGill now advances as RSEQ champion and will enter the tournament seeded among the top six teams in the country, while Laval would be ranked eighth. The seedings and schedule will be announced on Sunday afternoon.
This marked the ninth time that the programs have crossed paths in the Quebec final, with McGill winning seven of those matchups (1974, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2016, 2018, 2026) and Laval prevailing twice (1992 and 2010). Laval owns a 19-15 lifetime record in the conference final. McGill has posted a 14-10 mark in the Quebec title game.

SAINTE-FOY, QC — Daniella Mbengo a inscrit 18 points en sortie du banc et les Martlets de McGill, deuxièmes têtes de série, ont causé la surprise en défaisant le Rouge et Or de Laval, champion de la saison régulière, 51-45 samedi, lors du championnat féminin de basketball du RSEQ disputé à l'Amphithéâtre Desjardins du Centre PEPS.
Cette victoire procure à McGill une première bannière provinciale depuis 2018 et la 14e de son histoire. Il s'agissait de la première défaite à domicile de Laval en 10 matchs contre un adversaire de la ligue québécoise cette saison.
Les Martlets, qui portent leur fiche globale à 16-9, ont pris les devants 16-12 après le premier quart et 29-22 à la mi-temps. Laval a réduit l'écart de 34-22 à 36-32 après trois quarts avant de créer l'égalité 36-36 en début de quatrième période.
McGill a toutefois repris le contrôle à mi-chemin au dernier quart. Mbengo a marqué lors de deux possessions consécutives pour donner une avance de 45-39 aux siennes avec un peu plus de quatre minutes à jouer. Laval est revenue à deux points en fin de match, mais McGill a scellé l'issue de la rencontre à la ligne des lancers francs. Katie Rathwell a réussi deux tirs libres avec huit secondes à écouler pour porter la marque à 51-43.
Les 51 points marqués par les Martlets constituent le plus faible total pour l'équipe victorieuse depuis la finale de 2013, lorsque McGill avait battu Concordia 51-49.
Dans un duel défensif du début à la fin, McGill n'a affiché qu'un pourcentage de 28,3 % au tir (15 en 53), mais a dominé 43-38 au chapitre des rebonds et a converti 18 de ses 25 lancers francs.
Laval, dont la fiche glisse à 19-6, a éprouvé des difficultés offensives, ne réussissant que 21,2 % de ses tirs (14 en 66) et 5 de ses 27 tentatives de trois points. Le Rouge et Or a dominé la ligue au chapitre des tirs à trois points avec une moyenne de 8,9 par match.
Mbengo a été la meilleure marqueuse du match avec 18 points, réussissant 8 de ses 19 tirs en 25 minutes de jeu. Emilia Diaz-Ruiz, qui évoluait avec un protecteur facial après avoir subi une fracture du nez lors de la demi-finale contre Bishop's deux jours plus tôt, a dominé sous les paniers avec 11 rebonds — dont cinq offensifs — en plus d'ajouter six points. Elle a réussi 4 tirs sur 4 depuis la ligne des lancers francs.
Lily Rose Chatila a marqué neuf points et capté cinq rebonds, tandis qu'Emma-Jane Scotten a ajouté sept points et capté neuf rebonds.
Sabrine Khelifi a mené Laval avec 12 points et un sommet dans le match de 14 rebonds. Brinly Holt, meilleure marqueuse de l'équipe cette saison, a été limitée à huit points, alors que Léa-Sophie Verret en a ajouté sept.
McGill a inscrit 13 points sur des deuxièmes chances contre huit pour Laval et a limité le Rouge et Or à 13 points au quatrième quart.
Comme Laval sera l'hôte du championnat canadien U SPORTS (Final 8) à Québec, les deux équipes avaient déjà assuré leur participation au tournoi national. Cependant, McGill se qualifie désormais en tant que championne de la RSEQ et entrera dans le tournoi parmi les six meilleures équipes du pays, tandis que Laval serait classée huitième. Le classement et l'horaire du tournoi seront dévoilés dimanche après-midi.
Il s'agissait d'un neuvième affrontement entre les deux programmes en finale québécoise. McGill en a remporté sept (1974, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2016, 2018, 2026), tandis que Laval l'a emporté à deux reprises (1992 et 2010). Laval présente un dossier cumulatif de 19-15 en finale de conférence, alors que McGill affiche une fiche de 14-10 dans le match ultime provincial.
