MONTREAL — Lily Rose Chatila scored a game-high 24 points and Erica Simeone delivered a double-double as McGill rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat visiting Bishop's 49-45 in an RSEQ women's basketball semifinal Wednesday night before a raucous crowd of 512 at Love Competition Hall.
It was the lowest-scoring Quebec league playoff game since 2017 when McGill defeated Laval 46-35 in a semifinal en route to capturing the conference title.
The victory sends the Martlets to Saturday's league championship game against top-seeded Laval, a 1 p.m. tipoff in Quebec City. More importantly, McGill has secured a berth at the U SPORTS Final 8 national championship, March 6-9, hosted by Laval. It marks the program's first trip to nationals since 2018, one year after capturing the national title.
"Well, relief — that's how I felt," said Rikki Bowles, in her fifth year as head coach at McGill and the team's first semifinal win since 2018. "With the most on the line, this is probably our biggest win in my coaching career."
McGill, seeded second with an 11-5 record in regular season play, led 15-14 after the first quarter but managed just five points in the second and found themselves trailing 29-20 at halftime. Bishop's stretched the margin to 40-30 late in the third before the Martlets mounted their comeback with a 19-5 run in the final stanza.
"It was about moving the ball quicker," Bowles said of her halftime message. "We got away from creating advantages and held it too long against their pressure."
The Martlets defence held Bishop's to 2-of-12 shooting in the final 10 minutes. Back-to-back three-pointers by Emma-Jane Scotten and Chatila tied the game at 40-40 midway through the frame, and Chatila sealed the outcome with four free throws in the final 2:49.
"On a day when it was tough offensively, our defence kept us in it," Bowles said. "We held them to 16 points in the second half — and only five in the fourth — that was huge."
Chatila, who hails from Quebec City, shot 7-for-21 and went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Simeone, a second-year medical student from Montreal, buttressed the Martlets offence with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes, helping McGill edge Bishop's 44-45 on the boards and anchoring the interior defence.
"She came up huge," Bowles said. "On the glass, switching on the guards — she did a good job in all facets."
McGill shot 28.8 per cent from the field (17-for-59) and just 2-of-13 from three-point range, but converted 13-of-20 free throws. They also forced 19 turnovers, which led to a 19-12 edge in points off miscues.
Bishop's, which was seeded third with a 10-6 record, shot 30.0 per cent overall (18-for-60) and 4-of-21 from beyond the arc. Zou Boithias led the Gaiters with 17 points.
The win, combined with Laval's 57-50 semifinal victory over Concordia, means both McGill and the Rouge et Or will represent the RSEQ at nationals. Laval earned the conference's top seed and will host the championship tournament.
"We know we'll be at nationals either way," Bowles said. "I'm just so happy for our graduating seniors to finally get that experience. They've gotten a little better every year, and they deserve this."
The Martlets improved their all-time record over Bishop's to 98-94 since they first crossed paths in 1972-73.
McGill will now turn its attention to Saturday's provincial final at noon against Laval — the fifth meeting between the rivals this season — with a conference banner on the line. The provincial rivals split their four-game series this season, with McGill holding a plus-three in point-differential. Since the Quebec league was founded in 1972-73, Laval is ranked first winning 19 of the 52 conference championships that have been played, while McGill is second with 13 banners.

McGill renverse Bishop's au quatrième quart et file vers les nationaux
Chatila inscrit 24 points et propulse les Martlets en finale du RSEQ contre Laval
MONTRÉAL — Lily Rose Chatila a inscrit 24 points, un sommet dans le match, et Erica Simeone a réussi un double-double alors que McGill est revenue de l'arrière pour vaincre Bishop's 49-45, mercredi soir, en demi-finale féminine du RSEQ devant une foule bruyante de 512 spectateurs au Love Competition Hall.
Il s'agissait du match éliminatoire le moins offensif du circuit québécois depuis 2017, lorsque McGill avait défait Laval 46-35 en demi-finale avant de mettre la main sur le titre de conférence.
La victoire propulse les Martlets en finale du RSEQ samedi à midi contre le Rouge et Or de Laval, à Québec. Plus important encore, McGill a assuré sa place au tournoi national du Final 8 de U SPORTS, présenté du 6 au 9 mars et organisé par Laval. Il s'agira d'une première participation au championnat canadien depuis 2018, un an après le titre national remporté par les Martlets.
« Du soulagement — c'est ce que je ressentais », a déclaré l'entraîneuse-chef Rikki Bowles, qui en est à sa cinquième saison à la barre de l'équipe et qui signait sa première victoire en demi-finale depuis 2018. « Avec autant en jeu, c'est probablement la plus grande victoire de ma carrière d'entraîneuse. »
Deuxièmes au classement avec une fiche de 11-5 en saison régulière, les Martlets ont pris les devants 15-14 après le premier quart, mais n'ont marqué que cinq points au deuxième et accusaient un retard de 29-20 à la mi-temps. Bishop's a porté l'avance à 40-30 en fin de troisième quart avant que McGill ne réplique avec une poussée de 19-5 au dernier engagement.
« Il fallait faire circuler le ballon plus rapidement », a expliqué Bowles au sujet de son message à la mi-temps. « On a cessé de créer des avantages et on gardait trop le ballon contre leur pression. »
La défensive des Martlets a limité les Gaiters à seulement deux paniers en 12 tentatives au quatrième quart. Deux tirs de trois points consécutifs d'Emma-Jane Scotten et de Chatila ont nivelé la marque 40-40 à mi-chemin dans la période, avant que Chatila ne scelle l'issue du match avec quatre lancers francs dans les 2:49 dernières minutes.
« Offensivement, ce n'était pas facile, mais notre défense nous a gardées dans le match », a ajouté Bowles. « On les a limitées à 16 points en deuxième demie — dont seulement cinq au quatrième quart — c'était énorme. »
Originaire de Québec, Chatila a réussi sept de ses 21 tirs et neuf de ses 12 lancers francs.
Simeone, étudiante de deuxième année en médecine à Montréal, a ajouté 12 points et 11 rebonds en 24 minutes de jeu, contribuant à maintenir l'équilibre au chapitre des rebonds (45-44 en faveur de Bishop's) et à protéger la peinture.
« Elle a été immense », a souligné Bowles. « Aux rebonds, en changeant sur les gardes — elle a bien fait dans toutes les facettes du jeu. »
McGill a affiché un pourcentage de 28,8 % au tir (17-en-59) et seulement deux paniers en 13 tentatives de trois points, mais a converti 13 de ses 20 lancers francs. Les Martlets ont également forcé 19 revirements, qu'elles ont transformés en 19 points.
Bishop's, troisième tête de série avec un dossier de 10-6, a tiré à 30,0 % (18-en-60) et à 4-en-21 derrière l'arc. Zou Boithias a mené les Gaiters avec 17 points.
Combinée à la victoire de 57-50 de Laval contre Concordia dans l'autre demi-finale, la victoire de McGill confirme que les deux formations représenteront le RSEQ au championnat national. Laval, première tête de série, sera l'hôte du tournoi.
« On savait qu'on serait aux nationaux quoi qu'il arrive », a conclu Bowles. « Je suis tellement heureuse pour nos finissantes d'avoir enfin cette expérience. Elles se sont améliorées un peu plus chaque année et elles le méritent. »

McGill tournera maintenant son attention vers la finale provinciale de samedi à midi, cinquième duel entre les deux rivales cette saison. Les deux équipes ont partagé leur série annuelle de quatre matchs, McGill affichant un différentiel de +3. Depuis la création du circuit québécois en 1972-1973, Laval domine avec 19 des 52 championnats de conférence disputés, tandis que McGill suit avec 13 titres.
