SHERBROOKE, Que. — Freshman Rebecca McGrath broke two records, won five gold medals and added a silver to earn athlete-of-the-meet honours as the No. 3-ranked McGill University women's swim team cruised to a 24th consecutive meet victory and a sixth straight RSEQ championship in Sherbrooke, Sunday.
In 21 events over the three-day competition, the Martlets collected 11 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals. McGill finished first overall at the meet with 953.5 points, ahead of Ottawa (662), Montreal (535), Laval (485), Sherbrooke (338.5) and UQTR (89).
McGill also secured an unprecedented sixth consecutive RSEQ combined banner, which incorporates both the men's and women's results.
The Martlets have not lost in league competition since 2020, when they finished second at an RSEQ University Cup meet in Quebec City.
McGrath, a six-foot sprinter from Pointe-Claire, Que., broke both school and RSEQ records in the 50-metre backstroke with a time of 27.47, lowering her previous league mark of 27.53. The 19-year-old science freshman added gold in the 100 backstroke (1:00.30) and swam on three winning relays — the 4x50 medley (1:53.11), 4x100 medley (4:06.39) and 4x100 freestyle (3:45.84). She also placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:13.32).
The 4x50 featured McGrath, Emilia Mastromatteo, Nathalie Day and Stella Barsalou. The 4x100 included McGrath, Mastromatteo, Melanie Di Maria and Maya McGhan. The 4x100 freestyle relay was comprised of Harper Lipton, Barsalou, McGhan and McGrath.
McGill also won the 4x200 freestyle relay, where Iris Tinmouth, Lipton, McGhan and Emilie de Chazal combined for a time of 8:13.65.
Tinmouth, a microbiology senior from Comox, B.C., finished with four gold medals, including the 400 free (4:14.31), 800 free (8:40.25) and 200 butterfly (2:15.02).
Mastromatteo, an anatomy senior from Kenora, Ont., swept the breaststroke events, winning the 50 (32.11) and 100 (1:09.68).
Major conference awards were announced following the meet. Laval's Raphaëlle Tremblay was named athlete of the year. McGrath earned rookie-of-the-year honours, Tinmouth received the RSEQ leadership and social engagement award, and McGill head coach Peter Carpenter was named RSEQ women's coach of the year for the seventh time.
All gold medalists automatically earned first-team RSEQ all-star status, while silver medalists received second-team honours.
"It was a tough meet, coming off hard weeks of training, but everyone pulled their weight and made every swim count," said McGill assistant coach Nikki van Noord, who filled in admirably for Carpenter after he departed at meet's end to tend to his ailing father in Montreal. "This team really showed its grit and culture this weekend, and we now shift our focus to bringing a full complement to nationals."
McGill has qualified the maximum allowed 18 women (and another 18 men) for the upcoming U SPORTS national championship in Hamilton, Ont., March 12–14.
Points in the RSEQ final standings are accumulated over five league meets, with the championship meet counting for 50 per cent of the final score. The women's final standings after five meets have McGill on top with 733.08 points, followed by Ottawa (482.10), Montreal (389.75), Laval (368.05), Sherbrooke (242.30) and UQTR (55.88).

CHAMPIONNATS DE NATATION DE LA RSEQ :
Les femmes de McGill, classées n° 3 au pays, remportent leur 24e rencontre consécutive et leur sixième titre de championnes de la ligue
SHERBROOKE, Que. — La recrue Rebecca McGrath a fracassé deux records, remporté cinq médailles d'or et ajouté une médaille d'argent pour être nommée athlète de la rencontre, alors que l'équipe féminine de natation de l'Université McGill, classée no 3 au pays, a signé une 24e victoire consécutive et mis la main sur un sixième championnat du RSEQ d'affilée, dimanche, à Sherbrooke.
En 21 épreuves disputées au cours de la compétition de trois jours, les Martlets ont récolté 11 médailles d'or, huit d'argent et sept de bronze. McGill a terminé au premier rang du classement général avec 953,5 points, devant Ottawa (662), Montréal (535), Laval (485), Sherbrooke (338,5) et l'UQTR (89).
McGill a également décroché une sixième bannière combinée consécutive du RSEQ, un exploit sans précédent qui regroupe les résultats masculins et féminins.
Les Martlets n'ont pas subi la défaite en compétition de ligue depuis 2020, année où elles avaient pris le deuxième rang lors d'une Coupe universitaire du RSEQ à Québec.
Originaire de Pointe-Claire, McGrath, sprinteuse de six pieds, a battu les records de McGill et du RSEQ au 50 m dos grâce à un chrono de 27,47, améliorant son ancienne marque de ligue de 27,53. La recrue de 19 ans inscrite en sciences a aussi remporté l'or au 100 m dos (1:00,30) et nagé au sein de trois relais victorieux — le 4x50 m quatre nages (1:53,11), le 4x100 m quatre nages (4:06,39) et le 4x100 m libre (3:45,84). Elle a également terminé deuxième au 200 m dos (2:13,32).
Le relais 4x50 m réunissait McGrath, Emilia Mastromatteo, Nathalie Day et Stella Barsalou. Le 4x100 m quatre nages comptait McGrath, Mastromatteo, Mélanie Di Maria et Maya McGhan, tandis que le 4x100 m libre regroupait Harper Lipton, Stella Barsalou, McGhan et McGrath.
McGill a aussi triomphé au relais 4x200 m libre, où Iris Tinmouth, Lipton, McGhan et Emilie De Chazal ont combiné leurs efforts pour arrêter le chrono à 8:13,65.
Tinmouth, étudiante de quatrième année en microbiologie originaire de Comox, en Colombie-Britannique, a terminé la compétition avec quatre médailles d'or, dont le 400 m libre (4:14,31), le 800 m libre (8:40,25) et le 200 m papillon (2:15,02).
Mastromatteo, étudiante de quatrième année en anatomie originaire de Kenora, en Ontario, a balayé les épreuves de brasse en remportant le 50 m (32,11) et le 100 m (1:09,68).
Les honneurs individuels du RSEQ ont été dévoilés à l'issue de la compétition. Raphaëlle Tremblay, de Laval, a été nommée athlète de l'année. McGrath a reçu le titre de recrue de l'année, Tinmouth a obtenu le prix Leadership et engagement social du RSEQ, et l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, Peter Carpenter, a été désigné entraîneur féminin de l'année du RSEQ pour une septième fois.
Les médaillés d'or ont automatiquement obtenu une sélection sur la première équipe d'étoiles du RSEQ, tandis que les médaillés d'argent ont été nommés sur la deuxième équipe.
« Ce fut une compétition exigeante, après plusieurs semaines d'entraînement intensif, mais tout le monde a contribué et chaque course comptait », a déclaré l'entraîneuse adjointe Nikki van Noord, qui a remplacé Carpenter après son départ à la fin de la compétition pour rejoindre son père malade à Montréal. « L'équipe a démontré beaucoup de caractère et une culture solide ce week-end, et nous tournons maintenant notre attention vers les nationaux. »
McGill a qualifié le maximum permis de 18 nageuses — ainsi que 18 nageurs — en vue du championnat canadien U SPORTS, qui aura lieu à Hamilton, en Ontario, du 12 au 14 mars.
Les points au classement final du RSEQ sont accumulés au fil des cinq rencontres de la saison, le championnat comptant pour 50 pour cent du total final. Au terme des cinq rencontres, McGill domine le classement féminin avec 733,08 points, devant Ottawa (482,10), Montréal (389,75), Laval (368,05), Sherbrooke (242,30) et l'UQTR (55,88).
