McGrath strikes gold four times as Martlets rule, capture 26th consecutive RSEQ University Cup meet

McGill wins seven golds, 17 medals as backstroke standout earns second straight athlete-of-the-meet honour

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL — Rebecca McGrath of Pointe-Claire, Que., captured four gold medals and earned female athlete-of-the-meet honours for the second consecutive competition as McGill dominated the second RSEQ University Cup swim meet of the season, held Saturday at the 25-metre Memorial Pool in the Sir Arthur Currie Gymnasium.

The performance helped the Martlets extend their winning streak to 26 consecutive RSEQ meets, dating back to 2020.

The McGill women topped the standings with 555 points, ahead of runner-up Ottawa (320), Montreal (259), Laval (225) and Sherbrooke (144). McGill also swept the men's competition, as the Redbirds won the meet with 507.5 points.

The Martlets collected 17 medals, including seven gold, two silver and eight bronze. Their depth was particularly evident in the relays, where McGill finished first and third in both events, extending a remarkable streak of double podium finishes that began at the season-opening meet.

McGrath, a 20-year-old psychology sophomore, captured individual gold in the 50-metre freestyle (26.12 seconds) and 200 backstroke (2:13.97). She also contributed to victories in the 4x100 medley and 4x100 freestyle relays.

The McGill standout topped the women's athlete-of-the-meet scoring with 669 points, ahead of teammate Maya McGhan (560.5) and Ottawa's Grace Lu (543.5). McGill's Béatrice Weiss-Reid ranked fourth with 498.5 points, followed by teammate Aria Jade Fortier (492.5).

The scoring tally combines an athlete's highest World Aquatics performance rating with bonus points for medals and records.

McGrath's narrow victory in the 200 backstroke was among the closest finishes of the meet. She touched in 2:13.97, just eight-hundredths of a second ahead of Montreal's Martine Sorel (2:14.05). McGill's Lucia Chupin completed a double podium for the Martlets, earning bronze in 2:15.27.

McGrath also led a one-two finish in the 50 freestyle, edging McGhan (26.15) by three-hundredths of a second. Ottawa's Molly Steeves was third in 26.41.

Another major storyline was the breakthrough performance of Beatrice Weiss-Reid, a five-foot-seven freestyle specialist from Ottawa, who captured two individual gold medals in what head coach Peter Carpenter confirmed were her first individual victories at an RSEQ University Cup meet.

The 21-year-old science senior, majoring in microbiology and immunology, won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.31, ahead of Laval's Raphaelle Tremblay (2:04.25). Teammate Harper Lipton added bronze in 2:04.34.

Weiss-Reid completed her golden double in the 800 freestyle, winning in 8:56.62, ahead of teammate Emilie de Chazal, who took silver in 9:05.20. Ottawa's Sydney Colquhoun was third in 9:07.67.

Carpenter was particularly encouraged by the emergence of different athletes as major contributors.

"From my standpoint, I am thrilled to see new people step forward into the limelight," he said. "I love that we can have some significant setbacks due to injuries or illness and have others step in and not just fill a spot. They can step in and have a major impact on the results."

McGill's relay performances provided further evidence of that depth.

In the opening 4x100 medley relay, McGrath joined Nathalie Day, Fortier and McGhan to capture gold in 4:07.55. Ottawa finished second in 4:13.40, while McGill's second quartet of Chupin, Valentina Kolytchev, Jenna Wall and Stella Barsalou took bronze in 4:13.62.

The Martlets repeated the one-three finish in the closing 4x100 freestyle relay. Anna Yu, Harper Lipton, McGhan and McGrath combined to win gold in 3:48.60, ahead of Ottawa (3:50.06).

McGill's second entry, featuring Katrina Venditti, Kaitlin Malec, Barsalou and Fortier, took bronze in 3:51.64.

Fortier supplied McGill's other individual gold medal, winning the 100 butterfly in 1:01.43. Sherbrooke's Émilie Morissette was second in 1:03.13, while McGill's Wall completed another double podium with bronze in 1:03.39.

The Martlets also earned bronze in three other individual events.

Kolytchev placed third in the 50 breaststroke (32.74), behind Ottawa's Lu (32.39) and Montreal's Romane Hereng (32.40).

De Chazal collected bronze in the 400 individual medley, finishing in 5:00.88, just eight-hundredths of a second behind Hereng (5:00.80). Laval's Tremblay won the event in 4:56.32.

McGhan rounded out McGill's individual medal performances with bronze in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.22), behind Lu (1:10.66) and Hereng (1:11.16).

Across both men's and women's divisions, McGill amassed 31 medals, one more than all opposing teams combined, and won 12 of the 20 events, according to Carpenter.

"Really proud of where we are at," Carpenter said. "Two meets in and we definitely seem to be trending on a steeper trajectory than last year, so that is exciting."

McGill's next RSEQ University Cup meet is scheduled for Ottawa in two weeks, where Carpenter expects a tougher challenge from the host Gee-Gees.

"They always swim extremely well at home, so we will need to be ready," he said.
