RSEQ CHAMPIONSHIP: Martlets cast a spell on Carabins in Halloween thriller

Matheson leads McGill to silver, edging Montreal by just three points in championship showdown

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

QUEBEC CITY – Sienna Matheson of Kingston, Ont., led the McGill women's cross-country team with a fifth-place finish as the Martlets captured the silver medal at the RSEQ championship, an eight-kilometre race held Saturday on the Plains of Abraham.

Matheson, a 21-year-old chemistry senior, completed the course in 29 minutes, 55 seconds, finishing one minute, 20 seconds behind Laval's Morgane Drouin, who won the race in 28:35. The host Rouge et Or swept the individual podium, with Léane Baril claiming silver in 29:00 and Béatrice Fillion taking bronze in 29:30. The championship featured 105 entries.

McGill placed two runners among the top eight. Joining Matheson was Mia Blackmore-Barnable of Toronto, who finished eighth overall in 30:22. Gabriella Barton of Vancouver, B.C., placed 31st in 32:00, followed closely by fellow Vancouverite Julianna Woolfenden, who crossed the finish line 32nd in 32:02. Ena Smailbegovic, another Torontonian, finished 43rd in 32:47 to round out McGill's five scorers.

Those five combined for 85 points as McGill finished second in the nine-team field, edging the Montreal Carabins by just three points in the battle for silver. Laval won the conference championship with 24 points, followed by McGill (85), Montreal (88), Sherbrooke (98), UQTR (113), UQAC (179), Concordia (197), UQAR (206) and ETS (233).

McGill's five scorers occupied scoring positions of fifth, seventh, 21st, 22nd and 30th, respectively. Their combined total secured the Martlets' runner-up finish in the conference championship.

The Martlets conclude their five-meet fall season Nov. 14 at the U SPORTS national cross-country championship in Hamilton, Ont.
