(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Sarah Birtulescu of Montreal and Maria Fletcher of Vancouver, B.C., won the women's varsity double to highlight a pair of podium finishes for the McGill University Martlets at the 55th annual Head of the Trent rowing regatta, Saturday.

Birtulescu, a master's student in science,  and Fletcher, a political science junior, completed the 4.6-kilometre course in 17 minutes, 59.1 seconds, defeating Brock (18:06.2) by just over seven seconds. Trent was third in 18:06.8.

It marked a second consecutive victory for the tandem, which also won the varsity double at the season-opening Head of the Rideau in Ottawa.

The Martlets also reached the podium with a bronze in the women's novice eight, contested over a 2.6-km course. Coxswain Beatrix Smith guided Emma Zgonena, Paige Duncan, Holly Parady, Arowyn Fitzpatrick, Claudia Llado-Roberge, Adhara Collins-Scholten, Tzeviya Keller and Emma Broadbent to a third-place finish in 14:30.2.

Ottawa won in 14:13.0, followed by McMaster in 14:22.4.

"I'm incredibly proud of our athletes performance at the regatta," said McGill head coach Stéphanie Marchand. "They battled some really fast crews and were able to learn from the previous regatta and step it up.

"Moving to sprint training, we are quite happy with the foundation laid out, and are very much looking forward to the next step!"

Fletcher came close to adding another podium in the women's university single, finishing fourth in 18:48.6. Trent won the race in 18:06.1, while Brock took third in 18:35.0.

The Martlets varsity eight also finished fourth. Coxswain Olivia Saw and Fletcher, Birtulescu, Lily Dinwoodie, Kaelin Vasseur, Emma Nevala, Molly Curd, Lindsay Scott and Julia Milosz clocked 16:21.2, just 3.6 seconds behind third-place Ottawa (16:17.6). Western won in 15:37.6.

McGill rounded out its top-six results with a sixth-place finish in the women's varsity coxed four. Saw guided Milosz, Scott, Vasseur and Nevala to a time of 18:20.2. Ottawa was fifth in 18:07.3, while Brock won the event in 17:03.1.

The third regatta of the season for McGill will be the OUA championships, slated for Oct. 30-31 at the Royal Henley course in St. Catharines, Ont.
