MONTREAL — McGill delivered its most complete performance of the season, defeating visiting Laval 69–61 in RSEQ women's university basketball Saturday afternoon at Love Competition Hall to move into a first-place tie with the Rouge et Or. The result lifted the Martlets to 9–3, even with Laval atop the standings, and further tightened the race for playoff positioning.

McGill led 16–13 after the opening quarter and weathered a brief lull in the second, trailing 30–27 at halftime, before asserting control with a decisive third-quarter surge. The Martlets outscored Laval 23–16 in the third to take a 50–46 lead into the final period, then closed with a composed 19–15 fourth to seal the eight-point victory. McGill finished with 42 second-half points and limited Laval to 31 after the break, while shooting 81.8 per cent from the free-throw line (18-for-22) compared to Laval's 9-for-11.

The Martlets are now ranked fifth in the nation for free-throw shooting (70.4), displaying a composure at the line that is impressive compared to last season when they were ranked 31st at 66.8 per cent.

"It's not just one player," said McGill head coach Rikki Bowles. "We've got inside presence, speed that can attack the basket, and athletes who can shoot, so on any given night we can take advantage of that."

Lily Rose Chatila led the Martlets with 18 points, including 10-of-13 shooting from the free-throw line, while Emma-Jane Scotten added 11 points and four assists. Erica Simeone chipped in 10 points and five rebounds, and Emilia Diaz-Ruiz was a force inside with 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting.

McGill pulled down 40 of 81 rebounds in the game and turned ball security into defensive stability, committing just 12 turnovers compared to Laval's 17.

"That's almost the game right there," Bowles said. "Taking care of the ball limits their transition, and when it's five-on-five, I think we're pretty good defensively."

Katie Rathwell played a key two-way role, finishing with seven points and seven rebounds in 34 minutes while defending Laval's perimeter threats. "Katie was a warrior out there — 34 minutes, seven rebounds, seven points, a big bucket, and having to defend those guards," Bowles said. "Her defence and work ethic were amazing."

Brinly Holt led Laval with 16 points, while Sabrine Khelifi and Anne-Marie Babin added 11 apiece. The Rouge et Or shot 35.9 per cent from the floor and 25 per cent from three-point range, struggling to keep pace with McGill's poise during key stretches.

"It just seemed like there was always a sense of calm," Bowles said. "We knew what we were looking for offensively, and we stayed poised even when they hit big shots. When Laval went on their runs, we didn't hang our heads. We just got back to it."

The victory gives McGill two wins in three meetings with Laval this season. With one head-to-head game remaining — Feb. 14 in Quebec City — the Martlets currently hold a plus-6 edge in the point differential tie-breaker. The result also improved McGill to 87–105 all-time against Laval in a rivalry that dates back to 1972.

With the RSEQ guaranteed two berths at nationals — as Laval will host the U SPORTS Final Eight in March — Bowles believes McGill is trending at the right time. "I think the consistency has been much better this year," she said. "I hope that translates into our last four games and the playoffs."

Both teams return to action Feb. 5, with McGill visiting Bishop's and Laval travelling to Concordia. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.

MONTRÉAL — McGill a livré sa performance la plus complète de la saison samedi après-midi au Love Competition Hall, battant Laval 69-61 dans le cadre du championnat universitaire féminin de basket-ball RSEQ, ce qui lui permet de se hisser à la première place à égalité avec le Rouge et Or. Ce résultat porte le bilan des Martlets à 9-3, à égalité avec Laval en tête du classement, et resserre encore davantage la course aux séries éliminatoires.

McGill menait 16-13 après le premier quart-temps et a résisté à un bref passage à vide au deuxième quart-temps, menant 30-27 à la mi-temps, avant de prendre le contrôle grâce à une remontée décisive au troisième quart-temps. Les Martlets ont dominé Laval 23-16 au troisième quart-temps pour mener 50-46 à l'entame du dernier quart-temps, puis ont terminé avec un quatrième quart-temps maîtrisé 19-15 pour sceller leur victoire de huit points. McGill a terminé avec 42 points en deuxième mi-temps et a limité Laval à 31 points après la pause, tout en tirant à 81,8 % depuis la ligne des lancers francs (18 sur 22) contre 9 sur 11 pour Laval.

Les Martlets occupent désormais la cinquième place nationale en matière de tirs francs (70,4 %), affichant un sang-froid impressionnant sur la ligne par rapport à la saison dernière, où elles occupaient la 31e place avec 66,8 %.

« Ce n'est pas seulement une joueuse », a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, Rikki Bowles. « Nous avons une présence à l'intérieur, une vitesse qui nous permet d'attaquer le panier et des athlètes qui savent tirer, donc chaque soir, nous pouvons tirer parti de cela. »

« Il semblait y avoir un sentiment de calme permanent », a déclaré Bowles. « Nous savions ce que nous recherchions en attaque et nous sommes restées sereines même lorsqu'elles ont réussi de beaux tirs. Lorsque Laval a pris l'avantage, nous n'avons pas baissé les bras. Nous nous sommes simplement remises dans le match. »

Cette victoire permet à McGill de remporter deux victoires en trois rencontres avec Laval cette saison. Avec un match en tête-à-tête restant à jouer, le 14 février à Québec, les Martlets détiennent actuellement un avantage de +6 au classement général. Ce résultat permet également à McGill d'améliorer son bilan à 87-105 contre Laval dans une rivalité qui remonte à 1972.

Avec deux places garanties pour la RSEQ aux championnats nationaux, Laval accueillant les huit finalistes de l'U SPORTS en mars, Bowles estime que McGill est sur la bonne voie au bon moment. « Je pense que la constance a été bien meilleure cette année », a-t-elle déclaré. « J'espère que cela se traduira dans nos quatre derniers matchs et les séries éliminatoires. »

Les deux équipes reprendront du service le 5 février, McGill se rendant à Bishop's et Laval à Concordia. Les deux matchs débuteront à 18 h.
