KINGSTON, Ont. — Mathieu Gagnon scored twice while shorthanded and added an assist as the McGill Redbirds rolled to a 6-1 road victory over the Royal Military College Paladins on Friday night in OUA men's hockey action at Constantine Arena.

McGill built a 2-0 lead after the first period and carried a 3-1 advantage into the second intermission before pulling away with three unanswered goals in the third.

The Redbirds dominated play throughout, outshooting RMC 46-26, and continued to excel on special teams. McGill went 2-for-5 on the power play and struck twice while killing penalties, lifting its league-leading total to seven shorthanded goals on the season — a mark tied for second nationally, one behind UNB (8), with UPEI and Acadia also at seven. RMC went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

Gagnon's pair of shorthanded goals came at 11:05 and 13:35 of the third period and tied a McGill single-game record for shorties, a feat now accomplished nine times in program history. The most recent occurrence came in 2019.

Rookie netminder Benoit Forget earned his fourth start of the season for the Redbirds and made 25 saves, improving his record to 4-1. RMC senior Michael Davis stopped 40 shots in a losing cause as his record fell to 0-6.

The victory improved McGill's record to 13-7-3 and moved the Redbirds into third place in the OUA East, one point ahead of Ottawa (13-7-2). With five games remaining, McGill could still finish anywhere from second to eighth in the nine-team division.

McGill, which swept all four meetings with RMC this season, has now won 10 straight over the Paladins and improved their all-time series record to 84-10-4 since the first rendezvous in 1892.

RMC dropped to 2-17-4 and will host fifth-place Ontario Tech (12-10-1) on Saturday afternoon.

The Redbirds will have Saturday off to celebrate the 149th anniversary of the program's first game, played Jan. 31, 1877, before travelling to Ottawa on Sunday to face Carleton (10-13-1) in a 7 p.m. start.

Les Redbirds ont dominé le match tout au long, avec 46 tirs au but contre 26 pour le CMR, et ont continué à exceller en supériorité numérique. McGill a marqué deux buts en cinq occasions en supériorité numérique et deux fois en infériorité numérique, portant son total à sept buts en infériorité numérique cette saison, ce qui le place en tête de la ligue et à égalité au deuxième rang national, derrière l'UNB (8), avec l'UPEI et Acadia également à sept. Le CMR a marqué 1 but sur 3 en supériorité numérique.
