MONTREAL — Three Redbirds reached double figures, led by rookie Felix Theriault with a career-high 18 points but it was all for naught as Concordia pulled away for an 80–63 victory over McGill in RSEQ men's university basketball, Thursday night at Love Competition Hall.

Theriault, a 6-foot-3, 207-pound physical education freshman from St. Constant, Que., was a red-hot 8-of-9 shooting. His double-digit soiree easily surpassed his previous high of eight points scored in last week's contest at Bishop's. The product of John Abbott College also pulled down six rebounds to go along with a pair of steals and one block. Teammate Alexandre Reinert-Woodfine added 16 points and four assists, while Saransh Padhy chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.

Despite the balanced scoring, McGill struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 10 of 21 attempts, and committed 19 turnovers that the Stingers turned into 20 points.

Concordia set the tone early, racing to a 28–17 lead after the opening quarter behind hot shooting, then weathered a McGill push in the second to hold a 41–38 halftime advantage. The Stingers reasserted control in the third, outscoring the hosts 21–13 to stretch the margin to 62–51, and closed out the game with an 18–12 fourth quarter. Concordia shot an efficient 55.2 per cent from the field, while holding McGill to 47.2 per cent, and dominated the paint by a 52–40 margin.

Jaheem Joseph scored 16 points and Junior Mercy added 16 off the bench for the Stingers, while Karam Sahly contributed 10. Mercy was perfect at the line (6-for-6) as Concordia went 12-for-14 on free throws and received a major lift from its bench, which outscored McGill's reserves 32–9.

The contest marked the 203rd lifetime meeting between the cross-town rivals. With the win, Concordia improved to 134–69 all-time in a series that dates back to 1975. The win lifted the Stingers to 6–4 in league play, good for third place and two points back of Laval (7–4), while the fifth-place Redbirds dropped to 1–11.

With seven regular-season games remaining, the Redbirds now sit five wins behind both Concordia and UQAM (6–5) in the race for the league's final playoff berth. McGill will get a chance to close that gap Friday, Jan. 17, when it visits Concordia for a 6 p.m. tip-off at John Dore Court. The season series concludes with the seventh annual George Lengvari Cup rivalry game on Feb. 7 at McGill.

Trois joueurs de McGill marquent plus de dix points, mais ne parviennent pas à rattraper le retard accumulé au premier quart-temps contre les Stingers

MONTRÉAL — Trois joueurs des Redbirds ont atteint les deux chiffres, menés par la recrue Félix Thériault avec un record personnel de 18 points, mais cela n'a pas suffi, car Concordia s'est imposé 80-63 contre McGill dans le championnat universitaire masculin de basket-ball RSEQ, jeudi soir au Love Competition Hall.

Thériault, un étudiant de première année en éducation physique qui mesure 6 pieds et 3 pouces et pese 207 livres originaire de Saint-Constant, au Québec, a réussi 8 tirs sur 9. Son score à deux chiffres a largement dépassé son précédent record de 8 points marqués lors du match précédent à Bishop's. Le produit du Collège John Abbott a également réussi six rebonds, deux interceptions et un bloc. Son coéquipier Alex Reinert-Woodfine a ajouté 16 points et quatre passes décisives, tandis que Saransh Padhy a contribué avec 12 points et sept rebonds.

Malgré un score équilibré, McGill a connu des difficultés sur la ligne des lancers francs, ne convertissant que 10 des 21 tentatives, et a commis 19 pertes de balle que les Stingers ont transformées en 20 points.

Concordia a donné le ton dès le début, prenant une avance de 28-17 après le premier quart-temps grâce à des tirs précis, puis a résisté à la pression de McGill au deuxième quart-temps pour conserver un avantage de 41-38 à la mi-temps. Les Stingers ont repris le contrôle au troisième quart-temps, devançant les hôtes 21-13 pour porter l'écart à 62-51, et ont terminé le match avec un quatrième quart-temps de 18-12. Concordia a affiché un pourcentage de réussite de 55,2 % au tir, tout en limitant McGill à 47,2 %, et a dominé la raquette avec un écart de 52-40.

La série de la saison se terminera par le septième match annuel de la George Lengvari Cup, le 7 février à McGill.
