MONTREAL — Concordia held off a late McGill push to earn a 72–68 victory over the visiting Redbirds in RSEQ men's university basketball Saturday afternoon at the John Dore Court.
McGill won two of the four quarters and stayed within striking distance throughout, leading 23–17 after the opening frame before Concordia answered with an 18–10 second quarter to take a 35–33 halftime edge. The Stingers extended their advantage in the third, outscoring McGill 20–16 to lead 55–49, then held on despite a 19–17 Redbirds edge in the fourth. McGill had a chance to force overtime with seven seconds remaining, but a rare travelling call in the offensive zone on leading scorer Sean Duff resulted in a turnover, followed by a free throw that sealed the outcome for Concordia.
Duff finished with a team-high 15 points for McGill, while three other Redbirds also reached double digits. Luis Micourt and Saransh Padhy added 12 points apiece, with Padhy also grabbing eight rebounds, and Félix Thériault chipped in 10. McGill shot 40.0 per cent from the field and 7-for-22 from three-point range, and went 17-for-22 from the free-throw line, but was hurt by 17 turnovers that led to 17 Concordia points.
Jaheem Joseph led the Stingers with 21 points, while Yohan Léger added 15 and Karam Sahly chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds. Concordia received a decisive lift from its bench, which outscored McGill's reserves 46–3, and held a 32–14 advantage in points in the paint.
The game marked the 204th lifetime meeting between the cross-town rivals, with Concordia improving to 135–69 all-time in a series that dates back to 1975.
The Stingers improved their third-place record to 7–4 , while McGill slipped to 1–12, including a 1-3 mark in preseason games that counts in the RSEQ standings. The fifth-place Redbirds now enter a bye week before returning to action Jan. 29 in a must-win road game at UQAM (6–5). With six games remaining — including two against the Citadins — McGill sits five wins back in the race for the league's final playoff berth. The rivalry with Concordia concludes Feb. 7 at McGill with the seventh annual George Lengvari Cup game at Currie Gymnasium.

McGill a remporté deux des quatre quarts et est resté à portée de main tout au long du match, menant 23-17 après le premier quart avant que Concordia ne réplique avec un deuxième quart de 18-10 pour prendre l'avantage 35-33 à la mi-temps. Les Stingers ont accru leur avance au troisième quart, devançant McGill 20-16 pour mener 55-49, puis ont tenu bon malgré un avantage de 19-17 des Redbirds au quatrième quart. McGill a eu la chance de forcer la prolongation avec sept secondes à jouer, mais une rare faute pour marche dans la zone offensive du meilleur marqueur Sean Duff a entraîné un revirement, suivi d'un lancer franc qui a scellé le sort de Concordia.
Duff a terminé avec 15 points, le meilleur total de son équipe, tandis que trois autres Redbirds ont également atteint les deux chiffres.
