LENNOXVILLE, Que. — Lily Rose Chatila of Quebec City, scored a game-high 21 points, including the decisive free throw in the final minute, as McGill edged host Bishop's 60–59 in a tense RSEQ women's basketball clash Saturday night at Mitchell Gymnasium. The win was McGill's second over the Gaiters in three days and solidified the Martlets' grip on second place at 6–2, four points clear of Bishop's (4–4).

McGill set the tone early, leading 19–12 after the opening quarter and stretching the margin to 45–33 at halftime behind a dominant second period. The Martlets cooled off after the break, managing just eight points in the third as Bishop's closed to within 53–43 heading into the fourth. The Gaiters continued to chip away and pulled within one in the final minute, but McGill held on with timely rebounding and free-throw shooting to secure the victory.

Chatila, a  5-foot-7 guard who ranks second in the league scoring race with a 16.0 points-per-game average, went 5-for-11 from the floor and a steady 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. She added six rebounds and a pair of steals. Her 21st point, on a free-throw with 3:46 remaining, proved to be the game-winning tally. It matched the second-highest point total in regular season play for the 22-year-old science junior majoring in anatomy and cellular biology. Her career high is 29 points against Concordia last year on Jan. 16, 2025.

Emma-Jane Scotten hit three treys and finished with 13 points, while Erica Simeone contributed eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.

McGill shot 37.3 per cent from the field (19/51), including 5-for-12 from beyond the arc, and went 17-for-22  at the foul line.

Mariama Toupey Diallo led Bishop's with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Laurie Lafleur added 14 points and Zou Boithias chipped in 11 and seven boards. The Gaiters shot 31.3 per cent overall (20/64) and 9-for-29 from three-point range, while going 10-for-14 from the line.

Bishop's held a slight 40–38 edge on the glass, but McGill's bench outscored the hosts 19–5.

With eight regular-season games remaining — including a Feb. 5 rematch at Bishop's — the Martlets now hold a 2-1 head-to-head edge (but BU has a +3 point differential advantage) should the teams finish tied in the RSEQ standings. The victory also improved McGill's all-time series lead over Bishop's to 92–87.

Next week, the Martlets return home for a home-and-home against Concordia, beginning with a 2 p.m. matinee on Jan. 15 at Love Competition Hall, followed by a Jan. 17 rematch at the Concordia gym. The Gaiters play at division-leading Laval (6-1) on Jan. 17.

Cette victoire était la deuxième de McGill contre les Gaiters en trois jours et a consolidé la deuxième place des Martlets avec un bilan de 6-2, quatre points devant Bishop's (4-4).

McGill a donné le ton dès le début, menant 19-12 après le premier quart-temps et creusant l'écart à 45-33 à la mi-temps grâce à une deuxième période dominante. Les Martlets ont ralenti après la pause, ne marquant que huit points au troisième quart-temps, tandis que Bishop's revenait à 53-43 avant le dernier quart-temps. Les Gaiters ont continué à grignoter leur retard et sont revenues à un point dans la dernière minute, mais McGill a tenu bon grâce à des rebonds et des lancers francs opportuns pour s'assurer la victoire.

Chatila, une meneuse de 1,70 m qui occupe la deuxième place du classement des meilleures marqueuses de la ligue avec une moyenne de 16,0 points par match, a réussi 5 tirs sur 11 et 10 lancers francs sur 11. Elle a ajouté six rebonds et deux interceptions. Son 21e point, marqué sur un lancer franc à 3:46 de la fin, s'est avéré être le point gagnant. Il s'agit du deuxième total de points le plus élevé de la saison régulière pour cette étudiante de 22 ans en sciences, spécialisée en anatomie et en biologie cellulaire. Son record personnel est de 29 points, marqués contre Concordia l'année dernière, le 16 janvier 2025.

Les Gaiters joueront contre Laval (6-1), leader de la division, le 17 janvier.
