MONTREAL — Victoria Lawrence scored a game-high 26 points and Serena Tchida added 23 as Concordia earned an 80–74 upset over McGill in RSEQ women's university basketball Thursday night at Love Competition Hall. The win marked the first road victory of the season for the Stingers, who improved to 3–4, while McGill slipped to 6–3 and remains two points ahead in the standings. 

The result halted McGill's five-game win streak and put a slight damper on the annual Women's In Sport celebration, which also served as the team's Shoot for the Cure game, a U SPORTS national fundraiser in support of breast cancer research. 

Concordia seized control early, building a 26–18 lead after the opening quarter and carrying a 45–37 advantage into halftime. The Stingers maintained the upper hand through the third, outscoring McGill 18–16 to lead 63–53, then withstood a late Martlets push by matching McGill 21–17 in the fourth to seal the six-point victory. Concordia shot 46.9 per cent from the floor and a blistering 53.3 per cent from three-point range (8-for-15), while McGill connected on 48.4 per cent overall and 33.3 per cent from beyond the arc.

McGill received a balanced offensive effort, led by Daniella Mbengo with 16 points off the bench. Lily Rose Chatila and Emilia Diaz-Ruiz each scored 14, while Kristy Awikeh added 12, including four three-pointers. Diaz-Ruiz, who also pulled down nine rebounds, had two blocks,  a pair of dimes and a steal. She was selected as McGill's player of the game, presented by Poulet Rouge. Unfortunately, Diaz-Ruiz took a late fall after a heavy collision under the basket and was kept off the floor for the last 72 seconds with the Martlets trailing 75-71.

McGill held a 30–26 edge on the glass, but were undone by 19 turnovers that led to 19 Concordia points.

Lawrence was efficient throughout, going 10-for-18 from the field and 3-for-6 from long range, while adding six assists and five steals. Tchida finished 8-for-14 shooting with eight rebounds and six trips to the foul line. Deymi Morisseau chipped in 17 points for Concordia, which went 12-for-15 at the free-throw line.

The result leaves the teams tied at one win apiece through their first two meetings this season, with Concordia holding a slim one-point advantage in the head-to-head point differential. Two more matchups remain, beginning Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Loyola campus.

Thursday's contest marked the 199th meeting between the cross-town rivals. McGill continues to hold a narrow 100–99 edge in the all-time series since the rivalry began in 1975.

Ce résultat a mis fin à la série de cinq victoires consécutives de McGill et a quelque peu tempéré la célébration annuelle « Les femmes dans le sport », qui servait également de match « Lancez pour la guérison », une collecte de fonds nationale U SPORTS au profit de la recherche sur le cancer du sein.

Concordia a pris le contrôle dès le début, menant 26-18 après le premier quart-temps et 45-37 à la mi-temps. Les Stingers ont conservé leur avance tout au long du troisième quart-temps, devançant McGill 18-16 pour mener 63-53, puis ont résisté à la poussée tardive des Martlets en égalisant McGill 21-17 au quatrième quart-temps pour sceller leur victoire de six points. Concordia a réussi 46,9 % de ses tirs depuis le terrain et 53,3 % de ses tirs à trois points (8 sur 15), tandis que McGill a réussi 48,4 % de ses tirs au total et 33,3 % de ses tirs à trois points.

McGill a bénéficié d'une offensive équilibrée, menée par Daniella Mbengo avec 16 points en sortie de banc. Lily Rose Chatila et Emilia Diaz-Ruiz ont chacune marqué 14 points, tandis que Kristy Awikeh en a ajouté 12, dont quatre tirs à trois points. Diaz-Ruiz, qui a également capté neuf rebonds, a réalisé deux blocs, deux passes décisives et un interception. Elle a été désignée joueuse du match de McGill, présentée par Poulet Rouge. Malheureusement, Diaz-Ruiz a fait une chute tardive après une violente collision sous le panier et a été écartée du terrain pendant les 72 dernières secondes, alors que les Martlets étaient menées 75-71.

McGill a pris l'avantage 30-26 au rebond, mais a été battue par 19 pertes de balle qui ont conduit à 19 points pour Concordia.

Lawrence a été efficace tout au long du match, avec 10 tirs réussis sur 18 et 3 tirs réussis sur 6 à longue distance, tout en ajoutant six passes décisives et cinq interceptions. Tchida a terminé avec 8 tirs sur 14, huit rebonds et six passages sur la ligne des lancers francs. Deymi Morisseau a ajouté 17 points pour Concordia, qui a réussi 12 tirs sur 15 sur la ligne des lancers francs.

À l'issue de ce match, les deux équipes sont à égalité avec une victoire chacune après leurs deux premières rencontres cette saison, Concordia détenant un léger avantage d'une point au classement général. Il reste encore deux matchs à disputer, le premier ayant lieu samedi à 14 h sur le campus de Loyola.

Le match de jeudi marquait la 199e rencontre entre les deux rivaux de la même ville. McGill conserve un léger avantage de 100 à 99 dans la série depuis le début de la rivalité en 1975.
