MONTREAL – Maxime Filion scored twice, including a stoppage-time marker, as the Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 3-1 in U SPORTS men's soccer action Friday at Stade CEPSUM.

Emile Legault opened the scoring for Montreal in the eighth minute. Filion doubled the lead at 37:01 with a penalty kick.

McGill cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 54th when midfielder Samuel Armstrong-Giroux, a kinesiology freshman from Montreal, struck from close range, assisted by Gustave Therrien-Berry and Pedro Gulli.

However, with McGill pressing in the late stages, the Carabins counter-attacked and Filion sealed the win after the 90-minute mark on a setup from Sami McDuff.

Both sides combined for 19 fouls. McGill was booked twice, with yellow cards to Luke Rosettani (33') and Maddox Bailey (85'). Montreal had cautions to Omar El Kalkouli (29'), Adam Benmoussa (33') and Alexandre Pare-Varga (85').

The Carabins had a 21-11 margin in attempted shots, with a 13-8 edge in shots on target. Veteran 'keeper Ludovyck Ciociola made eight saves for the Redbirds, while Joakim Milli turned aside five for Montreal. Corner kicks were 5-3 in favour of McGill.

The result improved Montreal's record to 2-0-0, while McGill dropped to 0-1-0.

Next up, the Redbirds host Laval on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium. Montreal visits UQTR the same day, also at 1 p.m. The postponed McGill-UQTR game from last Thursday has been rescheduled for Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in Trois-Rivieres.

McGill a réduit l'écart à 2-1 à la 54e minute lorsque le milieu de terrain Samuel Armstrong-Giroux, un étudiant de première année en kinésiologie originaire de Montréal, a marqué à bout portant, assisté par Gustave Therrien-Berry et Pedro Gulli.

Cependant, alors que McGill pressait en fin de match, les Carabins ont contre-attaqué et Filion a scellé la victoire après la 90e minute sur une passe de Sami McDuff.

Les deux équipes ont commis 19 fautes au total. McGill a reçu deux cartons jaunes, pour Luke Rosettani (33') et Maddox Bailey (85'). Montréal a reçu des avertissements pour Omar El Kalkouli (29'), Adam Benmoussa (33') et Alexandre Pare-Varga (85').

Les Carabins ont dominé 21-11 au niveau des tirs tentés, avec un avantage de 13-8 pour les tirs cadrés. Le gardien vétéran Ludovyck Ciociola a effectué huit arrêts pour les Redbirds, tandis que Joakim Milli en a réalisé cinq pour Montréal. Les corners ont été en faveur de McGill, 5-3. 

Ce résultat porte le bilan de Montréal à 2-0-0, tandis que McGill affiche désormais un bilan de 0-1-0. 

Les Redbirds accueilleront Laval le 7 septembre à 13 h au stade Percival Molson. Montréal se rendra à l'UQTR le même jour, également à 13 h. Le match McGill-UQTR reporté jeudi dernier a été reprogrammé pour le 12 octobre à 19 h à Trois-Rivières.
