MASHTEUIATSH, Que.– Back-up goaltender Charles-Antoine Lavallée stopped a penalty shot midway through the third period and the UQTR Patriotes added a pair of late empty-netters to defeat McGill 5-2 in men's hockey preseason action, Tuesday, at Centre Amishkuisht. It was the second straight win for the Pats over McGill after the Redbirds swept all six confrontations last season.
The contest was relocated from Montreal about 480 kilometres to Mashteuiatsh, an Innu community on the shore of Lac Saint-Jean, in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The initiative was spearheaded by McGill engineering senior Mikisiw Awashish, a Mashteuiatsh native, who organized the event with cultural activities for both teams in the lead-up to the game. Francis Verreault-Paul – a recent McGill Sports Hall of Fame inductee who was named Tournament MVP when the Red and White won the 2012 national championship – was on hand in his capacity as Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador, to help perform the ceremonial faceoff with a special indigenous-themed puck.
"We were a bit flat today but it was still a 2-2 game going into third period, then they scored early to take the lead and we still had our chances to tie it up," said McGill head coach David Urquhart. "But the game was not really the most important thing today. What mattered more was the cultural experience for the team. We had numerous activities over our two days here and came away with a greater understanding about reconciliation and the culture of the first nations people. No one's going to remember the score but they will all remember the experience."
UQTR carried a 3-2 lead into the final frame after goals from Pier-Olivier Roy, Charles Beaudoin and Conor Frenette, while McGill countered with a pair from William Rouleau. With Redbirds goaltender Nicolas Ruccia pulled for an extra attacker in the final two minutes, UQTR sealed the win with markers from Anthony Munroe-Boucher and Kassim Gaudet.
The Patriotes outshot McGill 30-28, going 0-for-3 on the power play. The Redbirds finished 1-for-5 but killed off all three shorthanded situations to extend their spotless preseason penalty-kill streak to 15.
McGill had multiple chances to equalize in the late stages. Rookie Alexandre Lallier, who scored the overtime shootout winner in the teams' previous game (a 5-4 decision over Ottawa), was awarded a penalty shot with 10 minutes remaining but was stopped by Lavallée, who had entered the game for UQTR to start the third period. McGill also failed to convert on two power-play opportunities over the final seven minutes.
Patriotes starter William Grimard made 16 saves on 18 shots through 40 minutes, while Lavallée turned aside all nine faced in relief. Ruccia posted 25 saves on 28 attempts in a losing cause for McGill.
"It is important that our program has had two guys from this community — Mikisiw Awashsish and Francis Verreault-Paul — who are seen as role models for the young people here," added Urquhart. "The day started off with a very somber atmosphere as we visited the site of a residential school and heard the (locals) sing a traditional song. Some people who had attended this residential school were here and we were told that this was the last one in Canada when it closed in 1996. Then we walked from there down to the shore (of Lac Saint-Jean) and we went to the waterfront site where they had cooked (for both teams) under a large tent, a pre-game meal of wild game with goose, moose and beaver.
"It was really special to be able to experience that part of the culture. You learn so much through ceremony, tradition and food and to be able to share that meal together was amazing. It helped us start understanding what their history and culture is about. It's a step on the pathway for our team and to understand better the whole idea behind truth and reconciliation and that its about the First Nations having a voice at the table. So it was cool that we got to spend time talking to people in the community and holding an on-ice practice for the youth here. It was pretty special event be a part of."
The OUA regular season opens Oct. 3. UQTR, which finished 4-3 in exhibition play, visits Ontario Tech in Oshawa. McGill, 2-2 in the preseason, heads to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing University Lakers.

MASHTEUIATSH, Québec – Le gardien remplaçant Charles-Antoine Lavallée a arrêté un tir de pénalité au milieu de la troisième période et les Patriotes de l'UQTR ont ajouté deux buts en fin de match pour battre McGill 5-2 lors d'un match préparatoire de hockey masculin, mardi, au Centre Amishkuisht. Il s'agissait de la deuxième victoire consécutive des Pats contre McGill après que les Redbirds aient remporté les six confrontations de la saison dernière.
Le match a été déplacé de Montréal à Mashteuiatsh, une communauté innue située sur les rives du lac Saint-Jean, à environ 480 kilomètres, en l'honneur de la Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation. L'initiative a été lancée par Mikisiw Awashish, étudiant en dernière année d'ingénierie à McGill et originaire de Mashteuiatsh, qui a organisé l'événement et proposé des activités culturelles aux deux équipes avant le match. Francis Verreault-Paul, récemment intronisé au Temple de la renommée sportive de McGill et nommé joueur le plus utile du tournoi lorsque les mcgillois ont remporté le championnat national en 2012, était présent en tant que chef régional de l'Assemblée des Premières Nations du Québec-Labrador pour participer à la mise au jeu cérémonielle avec un rondelle spécial sur le thème des Autochtones.
« Nous étions un peu à plat aujourd'hui, mais le pointage etait toujours de 2-2 à l'entame de la troisième période, puis ils ont marqué tôt pour prendre l'avantage et nous avons encore eu des occasions d'égaliser », a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, David Urquhart. « Mais le match n'était pas vraiment le plus important aujourd'hui. Ce qui comptait davantage, c'était l'expérience culturelle pour l'équipe. Nous avons participé à de nombreuses activités au cours de ces deux jours et nous sommes repartis avec une meilleure compréhension de la réconciliation et de la culture des Premières Nations. Personne ne se souviendra du score, mais tout le monde se souviendra de cette expérience. »
L'UQTR menait 3-2 à l'entame de la dernière période grâce à des buts de Pier-Olivier Roy, Charles Beaudoin et Conor Frenette, tandis que McGill a répliqué avec deux buts de William Rouleau. Le gardien des Redbirds, Nicolas Ruccia, ayant été remplacé par un attaquant supplémentaire dans les deux dernières minutes, l'UQTR a scellé la victoire avec des buts dans le filet desert d'Anthony Munroe-Boucher et Kassim Gaudet.
Les Patriotes ont dominé McGill 30-28 au chapitre des tirs au but, mais n'ont marqué aucun but en trois occasions en avantage numérique. Les Redbirds ont marqué une fois en cinq occasions, mais ont résisté à trois situations en désavantage numérique pour prolonger leur série sans faute en pré-saison à 15.
McGill a eu plusieurs occasions d'égaliser en fin de match. La recrue Alexandre Lallier, qui avait marqué le but gagnant en fusillade lors du match précédent (une victoire 5-4 contre Ottawa), s'est vu accorder un tir de pénalité à 10 minutes de la fin, mais il a été arrêté par Lavallée, qui était entré en jeu pour l'UQTR au début de la troisième période. McGill n'a pas non plus réussi à convertir deux occasions en avantage numérique au cours des sept dernières minutes.
Le gardien partant des Patriotes, William Grimard, a effectué 16 arrêts sur 18 tirs en 40 minutes, tandis que Lavallée a repoussé les neuf tirs qu'il a affrontés en relève. Ruccia a effectué 25 arrêts sur 28 tirs dans la défaite de McGill.
« Il est important que notre programme compte deux joueurs issus de cette communauté, Mikisiw Awashsish et Francis Verreault-Paul, qui sont considérés comme des modèles pour les jeunes d'ici », a ajouté Urquhart. « La journée a commencé dans une atmosphère très sombre, lorsque nous avons visité le site d'un pensionnat autochtone et entendu les habitants chanter une chanson traditionnelle. Certaines personnes qui avaient fréquenté ce pensionnat étaient présentes et on nous a dit que c'était le dernier au Canada lorsqu'il a fermé ses portes en 1996. Ensuite, nous avons marché jusqu'à la rive (du lac Saint-Jean) et nous sommes allés sur le site au bord de l'eau où ils avaient préparé (pour les deux équipes) sous une grande tente, un repas d'avant-match composé de gibier sauvage, d'oie, d'orignal et de castor.
« C'était vraiment spécial de pouvoir découvrir cette partie de la culture. On apprend tellement à travers les cérémonies, les traditions et la nourriture, et pouvoir partager ce repas ensemble était incroyable. Cela nous a aidés à commencer à comprendre leur histoire et leur culture. C'est une étape importante pour notre équipe et pour mieux comprendre l'idée derrière la vérité et la réconciliation, à savoir que les Premières Nations doivent avoir leur mot à dire. C'était donc génial de pouvoir passer du temps à discuter avec les membres de la communauté et d'organiser un entraînement sur glace pour les jeunes d'ici. C'était un événement assez spécial auquel participer. »
La saison régulière de l'OUA débute le 3 octobre. L'UQTR, qui a terminé avec un bilan de 4-3 lors des matchs préparatoires, se rendra à Ontario Tech, à Oshawa. McGill, qui a terminé avec un bilan de 2-2 lors de la pré-saison, se rendra à North Bay, en Ontario, pour affronter les Lakers de l'Université Nipissing.
