MONTREAL — The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees built momentum throughout the afternoon to post an 82–55 win over the McGill Redbirds in men's preseason basketball play Saturday at Love Competition Hall.

The game and all stats will count as part of the RSEQ regular season standings, as part of a pilot project adopted by the Quebec conference coaches. Each Quebec school has three designated non-conference games that will count in the Quebec league but not in the OUA or AUS conferences, however.

Ottawa led 18–13 after the opening quarter and extended its advantage to 39–28 at halftime. The Gee-Gees used a strong third quarter to pull ahead 62–43 before sealing the victory in the final frame.

The result marked McGill's second straight setback against Ottawa since a 61–60 Redbirds victory on Oct. 15, 2022.

Alec Phaneuf led Ottawa with 16 points, while Elyas Tesloch-Luk and Louise Daoust each added 12. Will McCauley contributed 11 points, and Khalifa Koulamallah chipped in 10 as the Gee-Gees improved to 1–1 in exhibition play.

For McGill, Luis Micourt paced the attack with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Sean Puff and Maxwell Shimizu each reached 10 points.

Ottawa shot 48 per cent from the field and 42 per cent from three-point range, while McGill finished at 31 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. The Redbirds held their own on the boards (41–34) but were limited by 22 turnovers. Ottawa also converted 14 of 18 free throws (78 per cent).

McGill, which dropped to 0–2 overall and 0-1 in league play, continues its preseason schedule Sunday (Oct. 5) when it hosts Saint Mary's from Halifax at 12 noon. That game will also count in the RSEQ standings. Ottawa (1–1) continues its Quebec road trip at Laval later that day at 1 p.m.

MONTRÉAL — Les Gee-Gees de l'Université d'Ottawa ont pris l'avantage tout au long de l'après-midi pour remporter une victoire 82-55 contre les Redbirds de McGill lors du match de pré-saison de basket-ball masculin samedi au Love Competition Hall.

Le match et toutes les statistiques compteront dans le classement de la saison régulière de la RSEQ, dans le cadre d'un projet pilote adopté par les entraîneurs de la conférence québécoise. Chaque école québécoise dispose de trois matchs hors conférence désignés qui compteront dans la ligue québécoise, mais pas dans les conférences OUA ou AUS.

Ottawa menait 18-13 après le premier quart-temps et a creusé son avance à 39-28 à la mi-temps. Les Gee-Gees ont profité d'un troisième quart-temps solide pour prendre l'avantage 62-43 avant de sceller la victoire dans le dernier quart-temps.

Ce résultat marque la deuxième défaite consécutive de McGill contre Ottawa depuis la victoire 61-60 des Redbirds le 15 octobre 2022.

McGill, qui affiche désormais un bilan de 0-2 au total et de 0-1 en championnat, poursuit son programme de pré-saison dimanche 5 octobre en accueillant Saint Mary's de Halifax à midi. Ce match comptera également dans le classement du RSEQ. Ottawa (1-1) poursuit sa tournée québécoise à Laval plus tard dans la journée, à 13 h.
