OTTAWA — Jacob Lofaro of Grimsby, Ont., Patrice Légaré of Montreal and Ayoub Sabri of Morocco, each struck gold twice as the McGill University rowing team opened the centennial anniversary of its first season with a strong showing at the 51st annual Head of the Rideau regatta, Sunday, at Mooney's Bay Beach in the nation's capital.

The McGill crew, which rowed its first race in 1926, earned podium finishes across multiple events to capture the Kandahar Trophy, which since 2009, has been awarded to the university that accumulates the most points across all events at the competition.  It marked the second straight year that McGill claimed the Kandahar title, which it previously won back-to-back in 2017 and 2016.

Lofaro and  Légaré, both 22-year-old engineering seniors, teamed up to win the men's varsity double, completing the five-kilometre course in 20 minutes, 20.79 seconds. They defeated second-place Clarkson University, an NCAA school that was clocked in 20:22.84.

The McGillian duo then hooked up with Sabri to helped guide the men's varsity eight to victory in 18:03.34, easily outdistancing second-place Trent (19:05.05). Joining the aforementioned trio on that boat was Zoe Halstead (coxie) of Madison, Wis., Taivan Everett of Berkeley, Calif., Cole Allen of St. Lambert, Que., and Samuel Strong of London, England, along with a pair of veterans from Vancouver, B.C., Markus Maile and Edison Luke.

Sabri, a 20-year-old honours senior in math and computer science, collected his second gold medal of the weekend in the men's varsity single. He crossed the finish line in 21:38.76, to edge out teammate Edwin Luke (21:44.96).

On the women's side, the McGill varsity eight shared the top of the podium with Trent University when both boats finished in a dead heat for first, clocking in at 20:24.44.

The women's eight featured Varya Kataria (coxie) of Ottawa, Maria Fletcher of Vancouver, B.C., Kaelin Vasseur of New Haven, Conn., Emma Navela of  Chanhassen, Minn., Lily Dinwoodie of Terrace, B.C., Naomi Fandrich of Fort Langley, B.C., Eloise Doesserich of  Washington, D.C., Gillian Helliwell of Vancouver, B.C., and Kaitlin Puddy of  Calgary, Alta.

In the varsity team scoring for the Kandahar, McGill tallied 41 points for a healthy margin over second-place Ottawa (32). Finishing third was Carleton (26), followed by Trent (21), UQAM (13), Clarkson (6),  St. Lawrence (3), Montreal (0), RMC (0) and Dawson (0).

The Rideau regatta marked the first of four competitions for McGill this fall. The team heads to Peterborough, Ont., on Oct. 4 for the Head of the Trent, followed by the OUA championships Oct. 25 in St. Catharines, Ont. The season will conclude on home waters when McGill hosts the Canadian University Rowing Association national championships at the Olympic Rowing Basin, Nov. 1-2.

NOTE: The Kandahar Trophy was donated in 2009 by Mike Walker, a former coach at Royal Military College and at the University of Ottawa, who served as president of the Ottawa Rowing Club (2006-2011). While working with the Canadian International Development Agency, he was posted in Afganistan from 2008 to 2009, where he led the post-war Canadian reconstruction and development efforts. During his time there, he purchased the trophy, an etched metal vase, at a market in Kandahar and decided to name it after the Canadian service men and women who sacrificed their lives while serving the country.

Le trio Lofaro, Légaré et Sabri remporte chacun deux médailles d'or alors que la saison d'automne commence

OTTAWA — Jacob Lofaro, de Grimsby, en Ontario, Patrice Légaré, de Montréal, et Ayoub Sabri, du Maroc, ont chacun remporté deux médailles d'or alors que l'équipe d'aviron de l'Université McGill a inauguré le centenaire de sa première saison avec une excellente performance lors de la 51e édition annuelle de la régate Head of the Rideau, dimanche, à Mooney's Bay Beach, dans la capitale nationale.

L'équipe mcgilloise, qui a disputé sa première course en 1926, a remporté plusieurs podiums dans différentes épreuves et a décroché le trophée Kandahar, décerné à l'université qui accumule le plus de points dans toutes les épreuves de la compétition.  C'est la deuxième année consécutive que McGill remporte le titre Kandahar, qu'elle avait déjà remporté en 2017 et 2016.

Lofaro et Légaré, tous deux âgés de 22 ans et étudiants en dernière année d'ingénierie, ont fait équipe pour remporter le double universitaire masculin, terminant le parcours de cinq kilomètres en 20 minutes et 20,79 secondes. Ils ont battu l'université Clarkson, une école de la NCAA qui a terminé deuxième avec un temps de 20:22,84.

Le duo de McGill s'est ensuite associé à Sabri pour aider le huit universitaire masculin à remporter la victoire en 18:03,34, devançant facilement Trent (19:05,05), qui a terminé deuxième. Le trio était accompagné de Zoe Halstead (barreuse) de Madison, dans le Wisconsin, Taivan Everett de Berkeley, en Californie, Cole Allen de Saint-Lambert, au Québec, et Samuel Strong de Londres, en Angleterre, ainsi que de deux vétérans de Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, Markus Maile et Edison Luke.

Sabri, un étudiant de 20 ans en mathématiques et en informatique, a remporté sa deuxième médaille d'or du week-end dans l'épreuve masculine en skiff. Il a franchi la ligne d'arrivée en 21:38.76, devançant son coéquipier Edwin Luke (21:44.96).

Du côté des femmes, l'équipe universitaire de McGill a partagé la première place du podium avec l'université Trent, les deux bateaux ayant terminé ex æquo en 20:24,44.

Dans le classement par équipe universitaire pour le Kandahar, McGill a récolté 41 points, ce qui lui a permis de devancer largement Ottawa (32), qui occupe la deuxième place. La régate Rideau était la première des quatre compétitions auxquelles McGill participera cet automne. L'équipe se rendra à Peterborough, en Ontario, le 4 octobre pour la Head of the Trent, puis aux championnats de l'OUA le 25 octobre à St. Catharines, en Ontario. La saison se terminera sur les eaux locales lorsque McGill accueillera le championnat national de l'Association canadienne d'aviron universitaire au bassin olympique d'aviron, les 1er et 2 novembre.

REMARQUE : Le trophée Kandahar a été offert en 2009 par Mike Walker, ancien entraîneur au Collège militaire royal et à l'Université d'Ottawa, qui a été président du Club d'aviron d'Ottawa (2006-2011). Alors qu'il travaillait pour l'Agence canadienne de développement international, il a été affecté en Afghanistan de 2008 à 2009, où il a dirigé les efforts canadiens de reconstruction et de développement après la guerre. Pendant son séjour là-bas, il a acheté le trophée, un vase en métal gravé, sur un marché de Kandahar et a décidé de le nommer en l'honneur des militaires canadiens, hommes et femmes, qui ont sacrifié leur vie au service de leur pays.
