MONTREAL – Charles Boutin and William Rouleau each chipped in three assists as the McGill Redbirds edged the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 3-2 in men's hockey preseason play Wednesday at McConnell Arena.

It marked McGill's return to its 70-year-old home on campus after a year-long renovation forced the team to play out of Place Bell in Laval, Que., last season. The result was also mcGill's first-ever victory in four lifetime meetings against UPEI, a team they previously confronted twice in 2011 and once in 1991.

"The feeling on the team was that its great to be back at McConnell, its been since March of 2024 when we last played here," said David Urquhart, entering his fifth year as McGill head coach. "We could tell early in the game that the guys were really excited as we had a lot of jump right from the first shift. The guys were executing well on the forecheck and we could sense extra energy in each line."

The Panthers outshot McGill 37-31 but went 0-for-7 on the power play. The Redbirds were 1-for-4 with the man advantage. Penalties were plentiful, especially for a preseason game, with UPEI assessed 24 minutes on eight infractions and McGill taking 30 minutes on 11 calls.

Xavier Fortin, a third-year forward from Mirabel, Que., opened the scoring at 7:49 of the first period. Teammate Mathieu Gagnon of Gatineau, Que., doubled the lead on the power play just past the midway mark.

After a scoreless middle period, UPEI staged a late rally, sparked by Patrick LeBlanc who put the Panthers on the board 14 seconds into the third,

However, McGill cooled the comeback when Mikisiw Awashish's marker at 5:01 of the third proved to be the winner for the Redbirds. It was his second goal in as many games as the veteran defensive forward from the Innu community of Mashteuiatsh, Que., upped his career totals to 10 goals in 93 contests overall.

UPEI's Brett Bressette cut the deficit to one with four minutes remaining.

Freshman goaltender Nicolas Ruccia of Laval, Que., made 35 saves to collect his first collegiate win for McGill. He was recruited out of the QMJHL, where he stopped pucks for  Charlottetown & Cape Breton.

Joe Ranger turned aside 28 of 31 shots in 58:30 of work and was saddled with the loss for UPEI.

The Panthers (0-2) head to Toronto for a pair of non-conference games against TMU, Sept. 26-27. McGill (1-1) will host the defending national champion Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sept. 27, with puck drop slated for 7 p.m. at McConnell Arena.

MONTRÉAL – Charles Boutin et William Rouleau ont chacun récolté trois mentions d'aide alors que les Redbirds de McGill ont battu les Panthers de l'Université de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard 3-2 lors d'un match préparatoire de hockey masculin mercredi à l'aréna McConnell.

Ce match marquait le retour de McGill dans son stade vieux de 70 ans après une année de rénovation qui avait contraint l'équipe à jouer à la Place Bell de Laval, au Québec, la saison dernière. Il s'agissait également de la toute première victoire de McGill en quatre rencontres contre l'UPEI, une équipe qu'elle avait déjà affrontée deux fois en 2011 et une fois en 1991.

« L'équipe était ravie de revenir à McConnell, où elle n'avait plus joué depuis mars 2024 », a déclaré David Urquhart, qui entame sa cinquième année en tant qu'entraîneur-chef de McGill. « Dès le début du match, on pouvait voir que les gars étaient vraiment enthousiastes, car ils ont démarré sur les chapeaux de roue dès le premier changement. Ils ont bien exécuté leur forecheck et on pouvait sentir une énergie supplémentaire dans chaque ligne. »

Les Panthers ont dominé McGill 37-31 au chapitre des tirs au but, mais n'ont marqué aucun but en sept occasions en avantage numérique. Les Redbirds ont marqué un but en quatre occasions en avantage numérique. Les pénalités ont été nombreuses, surtout pour un match de pré-saison, l'UPEI écopant de 24 minutes pour huit infractions et McGill de 30 minutes pour 11 infractions.

Xavier Fortin, un attaquant de troisième année originaire de Mirabel, au Québec, a ouvert le score à 7:49 de la première période. Son coéquipier Mathieu Gagnon, de Gatineau, au Québec, a doublé l'avance en avantage numérique peu après la mi-temps.

Après une période intermédiaire sans but, l'UPEI a organisé une remontée tardive, déclenchée par Patrick LeBlanc qui a inscrit les Panthers au tableau d'affichage 14 secondes après le début de la troisième période.

Cependant, McGill a refroidi les ardeurs des Panthers lorsque Mikisiw Awashish a marqué le but de la victoire pour les Redbirds à 5:01 de la troisième période. Il s'agissait de son deuxième but en autant de matchs pour l'attaquant défensif vétéran originaire de la communauté innue de Mashteuiatsh, au Québec, qui a porté son total en carrière à 10 buts en 93 matchs.

Brett Bressette, de l'UPEI, a réduit l'écart à un but à quatre minutes de la fin.

Le gardien de but de première année Nicolas Ruccia, originaire de Laval, au Québec, a réalisé 35 arrêts pour remporter sa première victoire universitaire pour McGill. Il a été recruté dans la LHJMQ, où il a gardé les buts de Charlottetown et Cape Breton.

Joe Ranger a repoussé 28 des 31 tirs en 58:30 minutes de jeu et a essuyé la défaite pour l'UPEI.

Les Panthers (0-2) se rendront à Toronto pour deux matchs hors-conférence contre TMU, les 26 et 27 septembre. McGill (1-1) accueillera les Gee-Gees d'Ottawa, champions nationaux en titre, le 27 septembre. Le coup d'envoi est prévu à 19 h à l'aréna McConnell.
