McGill football’s Piazza selected by Edmonton in 2025 CFL Draft

MONTREAL – Dominic Piazza, an offensive lineman with the McGill University Redbirds, was a fifth-round selection by Edmonton in the 2025 Canadian Football League Draft, Tuesday. He was among 49 players selected from U SPORTS institutions, in addition to 23 picks from NCAA programs.

The 6-foot-2, 290-pound tackle from Mercier, Que., was the ninth offensive lineman picked and chosen 40th overall. He becomes the 154th selection in McGill history to be drafted by a CFL team, a number that also includes two in the NFL Draft.

"I'm a little shocked, it's only going to settle in when I get ready to pack my bags," said Piazza, who earned RSEQ all-conference honours and U SPORTS All-Canadian status last fall, then merited an invite to the CFL Combine Camp in Regina. "I'm extremely excited. It's a dream come true for me to become a professional athlete and be able to say that I played football professionally. I'm just trying to make everybody as proud as possible. I'm going to work hard and that's really what it is (about) at the end of the day. The work starts now. Whatever (training) I did in the past doesn't matter. Now we start to work for real. I'm very thankful for McGill. Shout-out to McGill and Go Elks!"

A measure of consistency, Piazza started in all 32 regular season games over his four seasons at McGill, including 25 at left tackle and seven at left guard. He also started in two preseason games and a pair of playoff contests. A product of John Abbott College who enrolled at McGill in 2020, the fifth-year senior is 24 years old and majoring in industrial and labour relations.

"I'm really happy for Dom," said McGill head coach Alex Surprenant. "Edmonton is getting a tremendous kid with a super nice attitude, a really coachable, great athlete. Scouts from every CFL team called me about Dom and I told them that he's a great kid from a wonderful family. He is a good teammate and a leader. Coaching a player like Piazza makes life easier for a coach.

"His athletic ability is there, and the scouts saw that on film. As a Canadian lineman, his challenge will be adapting to play inside. He's used to playing outside so that's going to be the biggest task in front of him at the CFL level and how fast he's able to adapt to the physicality that he will need to play inside. I think that he is comparable to the athletic ability of Pierre-Olivier Lestage, a starting guard with the Alouettes, who I previously coached (at CEGEP Saint-Jean). Dom has his type of athletic ability, so I'm not worried about that aspect of his game."

Over the eight rounds in this year's draft, 68.1 per cent of players were chosen from U SPORTS institutions (49 of 72 total picks). The 11-team OUA led all conferences with 22 selections, followed by the six-team Canada West (19) and the five-team RSEQ (8). there were no picks from the five-team AUS. Players are only eligible for the draft in their senior year, unless they successfully petition to be eligible in a another year.

In all, 17 of the 27 U SPORTS football programs had at least one player chosen, led by six from Western, while Alberta, UBC and the Montreal Carabins had five apiece. Defensive backs were the top dogs among U SPORTS players with 11 selections, followed by offensive linemen (9), linebackers (9), defensive linemen (7), running backs (6), wide receivers (5), and a CFL record two Canadian university quarterbacks: Montreal's Jonathan Senecal (62nd overall by the Alouettes) and Laurier's Taylor Elgersma (18th overall by the Blue Bombers).

There were no tight ends, kickers or long-snappers picked.

Since the first CFL Draft in 1952, a total of 3,300 football products have been drafted from U SPORTS and its previous acronyms (CIS, CIAU, SIFL). The breakdown by modern-day conferences includes 1,616 players from OUA-based schools, 898 from Canada West institutions, 488 from RSEQ programs and 298 from the AUS. Currently, about 200 Canadian university football standouts start the campaign on opening day rosters among the CFL's nine teams.
