QUEBEC CITY — Brinly Holt scored a game-high 16 points, including three in overtime, as the Laval Rouge et Or outlasted the McGill Martlets 65-59 in a defensive-minded RSEQ women's basketball season opener Saturday at the Amphithéâtre Desjardins.

Laval (2-0) trailed by as many as 11 points midway through the first quarter but chipped away to send the game into overtime after a pair of free throws by Frédérique Beaudry-Blais with 44 seconds remaining tied it 54-54. The veteran guard then drilled a three-pointer early in the extra frame to put Laval ahead for good.

Holt paced Laval in the overtime period with three points, while Beaudry-Blais finished with nine overall and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Sabrine Khelifi added 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Astan Waly Diarra posted a 10-point, six-rebound performance. The Rouge et Or, who shot just 30.4 per cent from the field and 22.2 per cent from beyond the arc, made up for it at the foul line, converting 17 of 28 attempts (60.7 per cent).

McGill (0-1) opened the game with a 12-2 burst, hitting five three-pointers in the first quarter to seize control, but their offence cooled dramatically thereafter. Daniella Mbengo led the Martlets with 15 points, while Seyna Diggs pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Emma-Jane Scotten tallied eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

McGill shot 31.0 per cent overall and 29.0 per cent from long range, but managed only six free throws all game.

Turnovers proved costly for the visitors, who committed 21 to Laval's 12. The Rouge et Or also held a 39-36 rebounding edge and outscored McGill 11-5 in the extra period.

McGill will host UQAM (0-1) in their home opener Thursday (Nov. 13) at 6 p.m. at Love Competition Hall. Laval, now 2-0, continues its homestand Nov. 15 against Concordia (1-1).

Laval (2-0) accusait un retard de 11 points à la moitié du premier quart-temps, mais a réussi à remonter au score pour envoyer le match en prolongation après deux lancers francs de Frédérique Beaudry-Blais à 44 secondes de la fin, qui ont permis d'égaliser à 54-54. La vétérane garde a ensuite marqué un tir à trois points au début de la prolongation, donnant définitivement l'avantage à Laval.

Holt a mené Laval en prolongation avec trois points, tandis que Beaudry-Blais a terminé avec neuf points au total et un parfait 6 sur 6 depuis la ligne. Sabrine Khelifi a ajouté 11 points, neuf rebonds et quatre passes décisives, et Astan Waly Diarra a affiché une performance de 10 points et six rebonds. Le Rouge et Or, qui n'a réussi que 30,4 % de ses tirs au panier et 22,2 % de ses tirs à trois points, a compensé cela sur la ligne des lancers francs, convertissant 17 de ses 28 tentatives (60,7 %).
