MONTREAL — Erica Simeone, a sophomore in medical school, came off the bench to tally 12 points and nine rebounds as the McGill Martlets, missing two starters, used defensive intensity to defeat the UQAM Citadins 54–41 in RSEQ women's basketball action Thursday at Love Competition Hall.

Despite playing without injured forward Seyna Diggs and guard Lily Rose Chatila, McGill generated offence through pressure, forcing 41 turnovers that produced 31 points.

"We were able to turn them over, like we thought we would be able to do, although not always able to convert on the other side," said Martlets head coach Rikki Bowles, whose troops shot 25.4 per cent from the floor, just 12.1 per cent from beyond the arc, and went an impressive 16-for-23 from the free-throw line.

"UQAM packed the paint a little bit and we were moving the ball well, found some shooters with time and space. We had looks (at the basket) with the time and space that we wanted but they just weren't going in today. We couldn't knock down an outside shot, so it's definitely something that we've got to spend some (practice) time on shooting."

McGill led 16–12 after the first quarter and 28–22 at halftime, then clung to a 33-29 edge after the third  before pulling away with a 15–8 fourth quarter finish. UQAM held a narrow 41–39 rebounding edge but struggled with ball control against McGill's press. 

The Martlets improved to 1–1 while dropping UQAM to 0–2.

Simeone, a 6-foot-1 forward from Montreal, shot 4-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from the line to pace McGill.

"Near the end of the game, we went on 13-1 run and Erica was a big part of that, with an outside shot, a couple put-backs, a layup and some steals on the other end," Bowles said . "I thought she was really good, coming off the bench for us, and that's what has to happen on any given day. Someone's got to step up, especially with these injuries."

Emilia Diaz-Ruiz added 13 points and five rebounds before being removed for the final 5:17 with an undisclosed injury.

"The injury bug has hurt us and we lost a couple of others during the game, so we were a little short-staffed today," added Bowles. ""Overall, we did a pretty good job, defensively, holding them to 41 points."

Senior Katie Rathwell had nine points and two steals, and veteran Emma-Jane Scotten contributed eight points and four boards.

UQAM, meanwhile, hit 41 per cent of its field goals, 41.7 per cent from three-point range, and 4-for-8 from the stripe.

Elisabeth Duchemin led the Citadins with 15 points and five treys, while Naomi Lehuu-Rivard had eight points and six rebounds.

The win lifted McGill's lifetime record versus UQAM to 57–35 since the teams first met in 2003.

The Martlets (1–1) will host Bishop's (1–1) in a Saturday (Nov. 15) matinee at 2 p.m. UQAM (0–2) is idle until Nov. 20, when it visits Laval (2–0).

Les Martlets marquent 31 points sur des revirements et égalisent le score à 1-1

MONTRÉAL — Erica Simeone, étudiante en deuxième année de médecine, est sortie du banc pour marquer 12 points et réaliser 9 rebonds, tandis que les Martlets de McGill, privées de deux titulaires, ont misé sur une défense intense pour vaincre les Citadines de l'UQAM 54 à 41 lors du match de basket-ball féminin de la RSEQ jeudi au Love Competition Hall.

Malgré l'absence de l'ailière Seyna Diggs et de la garde Lily Rose Chatila, toutes deux blessées, McGill a généré son attaque grâce à une défense pressante, provoquant 41 pertes de balle qui ont rapporté 31 points.

« Nous avons réussi à leur faire perdre le ballon, comme nous pensions pouvoir le faire, même si nous n'avons pas toujours réussi à convertir de l'autre côté », a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef des Martlets, Rikki Bowles, dont les troupes ont tiré à 25,4 % depuis le terrain, à seulement 12,1 % depuis la ligne des trois points, et ont réussi un impressionnant 16 sur 23 depuis la ligne des lancers francs.

« L'UQAM a un peu encombré la raquette et nous avons bien fait circuler le ballon, trouvant des tireuses qui avaient le temps et l'espace nécessaires. Nous avons eu des occasions (de marquer) avec le temps et l'espace que nous voulions, mais elles n'ont tout simplement pas abouti aujourd'hui. Nous n'avons pas réussi à marquer de tirs extérieurs, c'est donc clairement quelque chose sur lequel nous devons travailler (à l'entraînement). »

McGill menait 16-12 après le premier quart-temps et 28-22 à la mi-temps, puis s'est accroché à son avantage de 33-29 après le troisième quart-temps avant de s'échapper avec un score de 15-8 au quatrième quart-temps. L'UQAM a conservé un léger avantage de 41-39 au rebond, mais a eu du mal à contrôler le ballon face à la pression de McGill.

Les Martlets ont amélioré leur fiche à 1-1, tandis que l'UQAM a chuté à 0-2.

Simeone, une ailière qui msure 6 pieds et une pouce,originaire de Montréal, a réussi 4 tirs sur 9 depuis le terrain et 4 sur 6 depuis la ligne pour mener McGill.

« Vers la fin du match, nous avons réalisé une série de 13-1 et Erica y a largement contribué, avec un tir extérieur, quelques rebonds offensifs, un lay-up et quelques interceptions à l'autre bout du terrain », a déclaré Bowles . « Je l'ai trouvée très bonne, en sortant du banc pour nous, et c'est ce qui doit se passer chaque jour. Quelqu'un doit prendre le relais, surtout avec ces blessures. »

Emilia Diaz-Ruiz a ajouté 13 points et cinq rebonds avant d'être remplacée à 5:17 de la fin en raison d'une blessure non divulguée.

« Les blessures nous ont fait mal et nous en avons perdu quelques autres pendant le match, donc nous étions un peu à court de personnel aujourd'hui », a ajouté Bowles. « Dans l'ensemble, nous avons fait du bon travail en défense, en les limitant à 41 points. »

La senior Katie Rathwell a marqué neuf points et réalisé deux interceptions, tandis que la vétérane Emma-Jane Scotten a contribué avec huit points et quatre rebonds.

L'UQAM, quant à elle, a réussi 41 % de ses tirs, 41,7 % de ses tirs à trois points et 4 sur 8 depuis la ligne des lancers francs.

Elisabeth Duchemin a mené les Citadines avec 15 points et cinq tirs à trois points, tandis que Naomi Lehuu-Rivard a récolté huit points et six rebonds.

Cette victoire porte le bilan de McGill contre l'UQAM à 57-35 depuis la première rencontre entre les deux équipes en 2003.

Les Martlets (1-1) accueilleront Bishop's (1-1) samedi 15 novembre à 14 h. L'UQAM (0-2) sera au repos jusqu'au 20 novembre, date à laquelle elle se rendra à Laval (2-0).
