MONTREAL — Emilia Diaz-Ruiz recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds as McGill upset previously undefeated Laval 56–50 in RSEQ women's university basketball, Saturday afternoon at Love Competition Hall. The Martlets improved to 3–2 with the win, while the Rouge et Or dropped to 4–1.

McGill led from start to finish, taking a 16–12 advantage after the opening quarter, 34–27 at halftime and 44–39 through three, before outscoring Laval 12–11 in the final frame to secure the six-point victory. In the previous match-up between these provincial rivals, Laval also never took the lead, until winning 65-59 in overtime.

Diaz-Ruiz, a six-foot forward  from Hamilton, Ont., went 7-for-16 from the floor and added four assists with one steal. The chemical engineering sophomore now has four career double-doubles, two of them in regular season play.

"Amelia has really been good over the last few games, even at Concordia a few days ago she finished that game with 18 and seven rebounds, " said McGill head coach Rikki Bowles. "When she's just looking to be aggressive, she's very efficient offensively and got great touch around the rim… She did great on the glass too with 12 rebounds and got four assists in there and that's good for a young second-year cause she came in last year as an 18-year-old. I just think Amelia's really kind of found her groove. Her confidence is growing and we were really impressed with her today."

Lily Rose Chatila, a 5-foot-7 guard, contributed 14 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals before leaving the game with 2:41 remaining in the game after a heavy collision in a size mismatch with Laval six-foot post Julias Denis.

"When Lily went down it became a little more tough offensively (to score)," Bowles said. "But we really did a great job and that was post players defending guards and (vice-versa). We really just kind of fought down the stretch and rebounded the ball well. It was just a great team effort overall."

Erica Simeone chipped in eight points and pulled down four boards. Emma-Jane Scotten anchored McGill's defence with 12 rebounds, and Katie Rathwell and Laura Wells each drained a pair of treys. 

"Our defence was pretty locked into the game plan as this was the second time we've played Laval (this season) and I thought the first time we had done a pretty good job too, even though it was an overtime loss in Quebec City," Bowles added. "We worked really hard and got a couple of key stops."

McGill controlled the glass 39–35 and held a slight edge in points off turnovers, 9–6, despite committing 18 turnovers to Laval's 10.

Brinly Holt led the Rouge et Or with 13 points and five assists, while Léa-Sophie Verret added nine points and nine rebounds. Laval's bench provided 30 points, but McGill's defensive resilience and rebounding strength limited the visitors to 22 points in the paint.

The Martlets shot 37.9 per cent from the field, including 6-for-23 from three-point range, while a spirited defensive effort stifled Laval to shoot just 29 per cent overall and 4-for-17 from deep. Both teams finished at 66.7 per cent from the free-throw line, with McGill going 6-for-9 and Laval 10-for-15. 

The Martlets improved to 86–105 all-time against Laval, which will host the U SPORTS national Final Eight championship next March. McGill will make the short trip downtown to face UQAM (0–4) on Nov. 29 at 2 p.m., while Laval visits Bishop's (3–1) on Nov. 27.

MONTRÉAL — Emilia Diaz-Ruiz a réalisé un double-double avec 16 points et 12 rebonds, permettant à McGill de battre Laval, jusqu'alors invaincu, 56 à 50, samedi après-midi au Love Competition Hall, dans le cadre du championnat universitaire féminin de basket-ball RSEQ. Les Martlets ont amélioré leur fiche à 3-2 grâce à cette victoire, tandis que le Rouge et Or a vu la sienne passer à 4-1.

McGill a mené du début à la fin, prenant un avantage de 16-12 après le premier quart-temps, 34-27 à la mi-temps et 44-39 après trois quarts-temps, avant de battre Laval 12-11 dans le dernier quart-temps pour s'assurer une victoire de six points. Lors du précédent match entre ces rivaux provinciaux, Laval n'avait jamais pris l'avantage, avant de s'imposer 65-59 en prolongation.

Diaz-Ruiz, une ailière de six pieds, originaire de Hamilton, en Ontario, a réussi 7 tirs sur 16 et ajouté 4 passes décisives et 1 interception. L'étudiante en deuxième année de génie chimique compte désormais quatre doubles-doubles dans sa carrière, dont deux en saison régulière.

« Amelia a vraiment été très bonne lors des derniers matchs, même à Concordia il y a quelques jours, elle a terminé le match avec 18 points et sept rebonds », a déclaré l'entraîneur principal de McGill, Rikki Bowles. « Quand elle cherche à être agressive, elle est très efficace en attaque et a un excellent toucher près du panier... Elle a également été excellente au rebond avec 12 rebonds et quatre passes décisives, ce qui est très bien pour une jeune étudiante de deuxième année qui est arrivée l'année dernière à l'âge de 18 ans. Je pense simplement qu'Amelia a vraiment trouvé son rythme. Elle gagne en confiance et nous avons été très impressionnés par sa performance aujourd'hui. »

Lily Rose Chatila, une meneuse de 5 pieds et 7 pouces,, a contribué avec 14 points, quatre rebonds et deux interceptions avant de quitter le match à 2:41 de la fin après une violente collision avec la pivot de Laval, Julias Denis, qui mesure 6 pieds.

« Quand Lily est tombée, cela est devenu un peu plus difficile offensivement (de marquer) », a déclaré Bowles. « Mais nous avons vraiment fait un excellent travail, avec les pivots qui défendaient les gardes et vice-versa. Nous nous sommes vraiment battues jusqu'au bout et avons bien rebondi. C'était tout simplement un excellent effort d'équipe dans l'ensemble. »

Erica Simeone a ajouté huit points et quatre rebonds. Emma-Jane Scotten a ancré la défense de McGill avec 12 rebonds, tandis que Katie Rathwell et Laura Wells ont chacune réussi deux tirs à trois points.

« Notre défense était bien ancrée dans le plan de match, car c'était la deuxième fois que nous affrontions Laval (cette saison) et je pensais que nous avions déjà fait du bon travail la première fois, même si nous avions perdu en prolongation à Québec », a ajouté Bowles. « Nous avons travaillé très dur et avons réussi quelques arrêts clés. »

McGill a contrôlé le rebond 39-35 et a conservé un léger avantage en termes de points sur les pertes de balle, 9-6, malgré 18 pertes de balle contre 10 pour Laval.

Brinly Holt a mené le Rouge et Or avec 13 points et cinq passes décisives, tandis que Léa-Sophie Verret a ajouté neuf points et neuf rebonds. Le banc de Laval a marqué 30 points, mais la résilience défensive et la puissance au rebond de McGill ont limité les visiteuses à 22 points dans la raquette.

Les Martlets ont tiré à 37,9 % depuis le terrain, dont 6 sur 23 à trois points, tandis qu'une défense énergique a empêché Laval de tirer à plus de 29 % dans l'ensemble et 4 sur 17 à trois points. Les deux équipes ont terminé avec 66,7 % de réussite aux lancers francs, McGill avec 6 sur 9 et Laval avec 10 sur 15.

Les Martlets ont amélioré leur bilan à 79-101 contre Laval, qui accueillera le championnat national U SPORTS Final Eight en mars prochain. McGill se rendra au centre-ville pour affronter l'UQAM (0-4) le 29 novembre à 14 h, tandis que Laval se rendra à Bishop's (3-1) le 27 novembre.
