NORTH BAY, Ont. — Despite a spirited push and a 17-shot second period, the No. 8 McGill Redbirds couldn't overcome an early deficit, dropping a 6–2 decision to the Nipissing Lakers in OUA men's hockey Friday night at Memorial Gardens.
The setback was McGill's second consecutive lopsided loss to the Lakers, who had thumped the Redbirds 7-1 in Montreal on Oct. 18 after McGill had won the season opener 5-1 in North Bay. The Lakers improved to 7–30–0 lifetime against the Redbirds and both teams now sit tied with Ottawa at 7–4–1 in the tight nine-team OUA East Division.
McGill outshot the Lakers 40-37 but the visitors never appeared to be in control of their destiny.
Nipissing jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the opening frame with goals from Chad Denault, Kyle Foreman and Reilly Mayne. McGill responded early in the second period when defenceman Igor Mburanumwe notched his first of the season, assisted by Mathieu Gagnon and Thomas Belzile.
However, Ken Belanger restored the Lakers' three-goal cushion moments later. McGill continued to press, outshooting Nipissing 17–9 in the middle frame, but couldn't solve goaltender Zach Roy, who finished with 38 saves.
In the third period, Nipissing extended its lead through Deandres De Jesus before Redbirds rearguard Alexandre Blanchard converted on a setup from Alexandre Pellerin and Charles Boutin to make it 5–2. The Lakers sealed it late with a goal from Jeremy Duhamel.
Rookie goaltender Benoit Forget made his third start for McGill, yielding three goals on four shots before giving way to Nicolas Ruccia, who made 27 stops on 30 shots over the final 50 minutes. Neither team found success on special teams, with McGill going 0-for-4 on the power play and Nipissing was 0-for-5..
The Redbirds will look to rebound quickly as they continue their road trip Saturday against second-place Ontario Tech (8–5–0) in Oshawa. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m.

Il s'agit de la deuxième défaite consécutive de McGill face aux Lakers, qui avaient battu les Redbirds 7-1 à Montréal le 18 octobre après que McGill eut remporté le match d'ouverture de la saison 5-1 à North Bay. Les Lakers ont amélioré leur fiche à 7-30-0 contre les Redbirds et les deux équipes sont désormais à égalité avec Ottawa, avec une fiche de 7-4-1, dans la division Est de l'OUA, qui compte neuf équipes.

Aucune des deux équipes n'a réussi à marquer en avantage numérique, McGill ayant échoué 4 fois sur 4 et Nipissing 5 fois sur 5.
Les Redbirds tenteront de rebondir rapidement alors qu'ils poursuivront leur série de matchs à l'extérieur samedi contre l'Ontario Tech (8-5-0), deuxième au classement, à Oshawa. Le coup d'envoi est prévu à 17 h.
