MONTREAL – The McGill Martlets suffered a frustrating 2-1 loss to the visiting Concordia Stingers in a crucial RSEQ women's soccer matchup Sunday at Molson Stadium.
The result was a massive one for the Stingers (3-5-3), who leap-frogged two points ahead of McGill (2-4-4) and into a tie with UQAM (3-5-3) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the eight-team Quebec conference.
McGill opened brightly, taking a 1-0 lead just 5:43 into the match when striker
Vanessa Kumar finished off a setup from the team's collective buildup for her first of the season. Concordia equalized moments before halftime on a strike by Almas Aristide in the 44th minute, and Devon Vermaire provided the late dagger in the 83rd with an assist from Adrianna da Silva.
The match was statistically even, with each side registering four corner kicks. McGill held a slight edge in fouls (11–10), while Concordia was shown two yellow cards — a team caution at 53:10 and another to defender Ashley Burdick in the 88th minute.
Shots on goal were scarce, as the Stingers held a narrow 2–1 edge, converting both of their chances. McGill goalkeeper Ann-Stephanie Fortin allowed two goals on two shots, while Concordia's Nalia Louissant conceded once without making a save.
The Martlets, who have scored a league-low four goals in 10 games, now find themselves two points out of a playoff spot but with a game in hand. They have four matches remaining to get back on track toward post-season contention.
McGill hosts last-place UQTR (3-7-0) on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at Molson Stadium before visiting Laval (6-2-1) and returning home to face Sherbrooke (4-4-3). The Martlets close out the regular season Oct. 20 at Bishop's (2-6-3). Concordia heads to Bishop's on Oct. 9.
