KINGSTON, Ont. — The Queen's Gaels conjured up a little Halloween magic Friday night, handing the No. 8-ranked McGill Redbirds a 5-3 setback in OUA men's hockey action at the Memorial Centre. The spooky win evened the season series at one apiece, though McGill still holds a commanding 138-58-2 edge in the storied rivalry that began in 1895.

The hosts struck first and never trailed, powered by a two-goal performance from Liam Tanner and a 28-save effort from goaltender Aidan Spooner, who earned the win. The Gaels led 1-0 after 20 minutes, 4-2 after 40, and sealed it with a late power-play marker in the third.

Nolan Hutcheson opened the scoring midway through the first period with a power-play goal at 11:35, capitalizing on McGill's lone penalty over the first two frames. Queen's kept the pressure on in the second, outshooting McGill 14-11 and striking three times in a furious two-minute span. Tanner doubled the lead just 31 seconds in, Dharan Cap made it 3-0 at 1:47, and Tanner added another at 9:31. The Redbirds clawed back with even-strength tallies from defenceman Thomas Belzile at 2:32 and rookie forward Damen Boose at 15:54, cutting the deficit to 4-2 heading into the final period.

The Gaels' Will Bouwer restored a three-goal cushion at 11:17 of the third on the power play before McGill's William Rouleau replied with a man-advantage goal at 15:10 to round out the scoring.

The Redbirds finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Queen's went 2-for-3 in a penalty-filled third period that saw the teams combine for 14 of the 15 infractions called overall. Most of the penalties were in the final 2:18 which took 10 minutes to play. Despite the frightful finish, the referees allowed the teams to shake hands with no further spirited activity.

McGill goaltender Nicolas Ruccia made 32 saves in the loss, facing 37 shots overall compared to the Redbirds' 31 on Spooner.

The Redbirds (5-3-1) won't have to travel far for their next matchup, a short Saturday afternoon jaunt across Kingston to face the RMC Paladins (1-8-0) in a 2 p.m. matinee streamed on OUA-TV. Queen's (4-5-0) will also return to action Saturday, hosting second-place Ontario Tech (7-2-0) at 7:30 p.m.

Les hôtes ont frappé les premiers et n'ont jamais été menés au score, grâce à deux buts de Liam Tanner et aux 28 arrêts du gardien Aidan Spooner, qui a remporté la victoire.
