KINGSTON, Ont. — Charles Boutin scored twice and Jerome Gilbert tallied shorthanded as the No. 8-ranked McGill Redbirds doubled the Royal Military College Paladins 4-2 in OUA men's hockey at Constantine Arena on Saturday.
The victory was McGill's eighth straight over RMC and improved the Redbirds' lifetime record against their oldest rivals to 82-10-4 since the schools first clashed in 1892 — one of the longest-running rivalries in organized hockey.
McGill led 1-1 after the first period, 3-1 through 40 minutes and added an empty-netter late in the third. Boutin's first of the night tied the game 1-1 at 16:00 of the opening frame, after RMC's Connor Prestwich opened the scoring midway through the period. The Redbirds seized control in the second, with Gilbert scoring shorthanded at 13:36 and Boutin adding another at 17:56. The Paladins briefly closed the gap in the third on a marker by Isaac Pascoal at 10:46, but Xavier Fortin sealed the win into an empty net at 17:27.
Both teams fired 35 shots apiece, with McGill rookie goaltender Benoit Forget turning aside 33 for the win. His counterpart, Ethan Morrow, made 31 saves in a losing cause. Neither side connected on the power play — McGill went 0-for-3 and RMC 0-for-5 — in a physical contest that featured 14 minor penalties.
The result lifted McGill to 6-3-1, good for third place in the nine-team OUA East division. Next up, the Redbirds return home for their annual Friends of McGill Hockey Alumni Weekend, beginning with a Friday night (Nov. 7) tilt against Carleton (4-5-1) at the refurbished McConnell Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
RMC, now 1-9-0, continues its homestand next weekend, hosting Nipissing (5-3-1) and Carleton on Nov. 7 and 8.

KINGSTON, Ontario — Charles Boutin a marqué deux buts et Jérôme Gilbert a marqué en infériorité numérique alors que les Redbirds de McGill, classés 8e, ont battu les Paladins du Collège militaire royal 4-2 samedi lors d'un match de hockey masculin de l'OUA à la Constantine Arena.
Cette victoire est la huitième consécutive de McGill contre le CMR et porte le bilan des Redbirds contre leurs plus anciens rivaux à 82-10-4 depuis leur première rencontre en 1892 — l'une des plus longues rivalités dans le hockey organisé.
McGill menait 1-1 après la première période, 3-1 après 40 minutes et a ajouté un but dans un filet désert en fin de troisième période. Le premier but de Boutin dans la soirée a égalisé le score à 1-1 à 16:00 de la première période, après que Connor Prestwich du CMR ait ouvert le score à mi-parcours de la période.
