Fares fancy footwork pays daily double dividends as Redbirds soar past Sherbrooke

Box Score SHERBROOKE – Rookie striker Maher Fares of Brossard, Que., scored a pair of first-half goals and McGill held on for a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Sherbrooke in men's soccer at Stade Nouveau Concorde, Friday.

It marked Redbirds first victory in three games this season (1-1-1) and extended their undefeated streak against the Vert & Or to 2-0-1 since a 3-0 loss on Oct. 23, 2022.

"We started very well, something that we have been doing since in the preseason. In the second half we had some good scoring chances but couldn't finish," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot."Sherbrooke is a much improved team and had a few good scoring chances. They hit the crossbar in the first half and hit the post in the last minute of the game but we were the better team today and deserved the win."

Maher, a 19-year-old management freshman, opened the scoring in just the third minute of play and then gave the Redbirds a two-goal cushion 16 minute later.

"He is a very technical, smart player and has done well," said Mounicot of his rookie who has started all three regular season games thus far.

The Vert & Or scored their lone marker in the 43rd minute on a header by Olivier Fleurant-Dumoulin who converted a corner kick. It snapped a shutout bid by McGill goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola, a junior from Montreal, who kicked out three of four shots and was credited with the victory.

But it proved to be a costly goal, as Sherbrooke senior David Harrison was red-carded for throwing a punch on the play and they were forced to play a man short the rest of the contest.

Maher, named as McGill's player of the game,  was one of three freshmen who started in the Redbirds lineup, a trio that included defenders Angus Logan from Scotland and Ibrahim Chami of Laval, Que.

UQTR netminder Alexandre Tremblay made four saves on six shots and took the loss.

Sherbrooke (0-3-0) returns to action on Sept. 13 at Laval (0-1-1) and McGill (1-1-1) has a bye in the schedule. The Redbirds will host Laval on Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
