MONTREAL – Newcomer
Mujtaba Mirhasan of Carignan, Que., scored the tying goal in 80th minute as McGill rallied for a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the visiting UQAM Citadins in men's university soccer, Sunday night, at Percival Molson Stadium.
The Redbirds improved to 0-1-1 in the RSEQ conference standings, while UQAM sits second at 1-0-1. The game produced 22 fouls but only a pair of yellow cards, a low number for this heated rivalry. McGill had a 19-8 margin in attempted shots, including a 10-5 edge on target.
The Citadins had taken a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute when
Daoub Mardi converted a redirected pass from
Matthieu Tremblay who had corralled a corner kick from
Gregory David.
Just when it was starting to look gloomy for the Redbirds, midfielder
Jordan Persia-Navascues stripped the ball from UQAM defender
Patrick Denis and deftly pushed the ball ahead to Mirhasan, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound striker who fired the equalizer with a right-footed shot from 15 yards out into the far left corner of the net. A product of the Montreal Impact Academy, Mirhasan is a first-year NCAA transfer from the University of Vermont who is currently studying software engineering.
Senior goalkeeper
Ludovyck Ciociola of Ahuntsic, Que., made two saves on three shots to register the stalemate while UQAM's
Martin Cantona racked up nine saves on 10 shots faced.
Up next in the schedule, McGill (0-1-1) will travel to Sherbrooke (0-2-0) on Sept. 6, while UQAM (1-0-1) will host the Montreal Carabins (2-0-0) on Sept. 8.
