McGill's Mastromatteo masterful, three school records fall in Coupe de Quebec swim meet

QUEBEC CITY – Emilia Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ont., broke a school record en route to winning three gold medals, one silver and a bronze at the Coupe de Quebec Senior swim meet at Laval's PEPS pool in Quebec City, a three-day open competition that concluded on Sunday.

In fact three school records fell for McGill, which scored 4,054.5 combined points (men and women) to finish second of 41 teams overall, behind the renowned CAMO Swim Club (4,976). The Martlets captured four gold medals, five silvers and four bronzes. Other university squads in the team standings were Ottawa (5th, 2,696.5), UQTR (12th, 585.5), Laval (14th, 577) and Sherbrooke (26th, 188).

Mastromatteo, a 20-year-old science junior majoring in anatomy and cellular biology, set a personal and team best in the morning prelims of the 50-metre breaststroke (31.22), which erased her previous short-course standard of 31.29 set at the 2024 Nationals. The 5-foot-6 sprinter won the finals of the 50m breast (31.31), in addition to helping the victorious 4x100m medley relay (4:10.18) and the winning 4x50m mixed medley relay (1:45.66). She claimed silver in the 50m butterfly (27.39) and bronze in the 100m fly (1:01.36).

Joining her on the 4x100 MR was Nathalie Day, Naomie Lo and Maya McGhan. Others on the mixed 4x50 MR included Romain Vanmoen, Erik Linseisen and Stella Barsalou.

Lo, a native of Toronto, broke the school record with her gold medal result in the 200 fly (2:14.29) and posted a silver-medal finish in the 400 free.

Iris Tinmouth, a science junior from Comox, B.C., won the 400 free, setting a school record in 14.88.

Other podiums went to freshman Kealeigh McLeod (silver, 400 IM) of Calgary, sophomore Maya McGhan (silver, 200 IM) of Ottawa and Gabrielle Brown (bronze, 400 IM; and bronze, 400 free), a sophomore from Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que.

The McGill squad now has a two-month break for exams, holidays and training. The meet schedule resumes with the RSEQ conference's fourth University Cup competition at the Trois-Rivieres on Feb. 1.
