Lily Rose Chatila scored a career-high 21 points and rookie
Emilia Diaz-Ruiz registered a double-double as McGill led from start to finish with a 66-55 conquest over Concordia in women's university basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
It was the Martlets third win in the last four meetings with their cross-town rivals after just one victory in the previous eight.
McGill, which had a commanding 46-31 edge in rebounding, won the turnover battle 26-20. They jumped into a 19-11 lead after the opening quarter and extended that 34-20 by halftime. They took a dominant 52-36 advantage into the final quarter, which Concordia had an insufficient 19-14 edge.
Chatila, a 5-foot-7 guard from Quebec City, was deployed for 34 minutes of court duty. The 21-year-old anatomy and cellular biology major shot 8-for-15 from the field, including a 1-for-4 effort from three-point range. She went a perfect-4-for-4 from the free-throw line and also contributed a superb seven steals with five assists and three rebounds.
Diaz-Ruiz, who came off the bench to post her second double-double of her young career (including one in the preseason), scored 11 points and pulled down an identical number off the glass. She shot 5-for-9, pilfered four balls and was credited with an assist.
Teammate
Emma-Jane Scotten also reached double-digits with 11 points, largely on the strength of a 3-for-5 performance from long distance. She added three rebounds, three steals and four assists.
Concordia's
Kayla Brutus scored 21 points in a losing cause and teammate
Victoria Lawrence added 16.
The Martlets shot 38.2 per cent in the game (26/68), went 6-for-20 from distance and dropped eight of 12 attempts from the line. The Stingers responded with a 37.5 per cent success rate from the floor (18/48), went 7-for-18 from the arc and 12-for-20 from the stripe.
The cross-town rivals will meet next on Jan. 16 at Love Competition Hall, followed by two games at the John Dore Court (Jan. 18 and Feb. 20).
Both teams resume play on Nov. 16 as McGill (1-1) will play division-leading Laval (2-0) in Quebec City and Concordia (0-2) will look for its first win when they play the winless Citadins at UQAM (0-1).
