OTTAWA – Sophomore
Emilia Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ont., won four gold medals and was named swimmer of the meet for the third time this season as the McGill Martlets swept their third straight RSEQ University Cup competition of the season at the Montpetit Hall pool in the nation's capital, Saturday.
The Martlets scored 566 points to finish ahead of hometown Ottawa (465) in the six-team competition. The Montreal Carabins were third (226), followed by Laval (204), Sherbrooke (71) and UQTR (51).
The McGill women led all schools with an impressive 17 podiums in 11 races, collecting seven gold medals, six silvers and four bronzes. Ottawa was next with nine (2-5-2), followed by Laval (1-0-3), Montreal (1-0-2). Both Sherbrooke and UQTR were kept off the podium.
Mastromatteo, a 20-year-old science or majoring in anatomy and cellular biology, won the 50-metre butterfly (27.73), 50m backstroke (28.62), 100 back (1:01.72) and swam the second leg of the winning 4x50m medley relay, which was clocked in 1:53.23.
Other members of that relay included
Elizabeth Ling in the leadoff spot,
Jenna Wall on the third leg and
Greta Zapparoli on the anchor leg.
McGill won the 4x50 freestyle relay (1:45.84) with Zapparoli in leadoff, followed by Ling,
Maya McGhan and
Nathalie Day.
The Martlets also the gruelling 4x200 freestyle relay (8:23.92), with 17-year-old rookie
Kealeigh McLeod in leadoff, followed by
Naomie Lo,
Iris Tinmouth and McGhan.
Lo also captured the team's other individual race victory, in the 200 butterfly. The 21-year-old was clocked in 2:16.29.
"We were happy to walk away from Ottawa with another victory," said McGill head coach
Peter Carpenter. "The Gee-Gees were game and ready to go in their home pool and our men were actually losing the meet at the halfway point, which is the first time that has happened in more than a year. Ultimately our depth got us through in the end on both sides of the meet."
There is little time to sit on their laurels, however, as the team will race again less than 24 hours later, with a non-conference dual meet against the defending national champion Toronto Varsity Blues. The meet is dubbed "A Splash of Purple Fundraiser for Pancreatic Cancer Research" and kicks off on Saturday (Nov. 10) at 12 noon in the Currie Gym's Memorial Pool.
