Lea-Sophie Verret scored 23 points and
Rosemarie Dumont registered a double-double as defending league champion Laval opened the RSEQ women's basketball season with a convincing 73-46 victory over McGill at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.
The result was disappointing start to the 105th year of operation the McGill women's program and a 26th consecutive victory in RSEQ league and playoff action for the Rouge et Or, dating back to last season
Dumont tallied 11 points and pulled down a monster 15 rebounds.
Lily Rose Chatila scored 16 points to pace the Martlets who are now 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the RSEQ. She played a game=-high 31 minutes and shot 6-for-12 from the field, including a 4-for-6 effort from three-point range. She added a pair of rebounds to go along with a game-high five assists, one block and a steal.
Laval took a commanding 27-10 lead in the opening quarter and were ahead 38-23 at halftime. The Rouge et Or took the third quarter 25-16 and then held a 10-7 edge in the final frame. The visitors had a 41-29 edge in rebounding and a favourable 21-14 edge in turnovers. They shot 45.2 per cent from the floor (28/62), went 4-for-15 from the arc and 13-for-18 from the line.
McGill shot 32.7 per cent from the field (17/52), went 6-for-20 from downtown and made six of nine attempts from the charity stripe.
Both teams resume their schedules on Saturday, (Nov. 9) with Concordia visiting McGill in a 4 p.m. tip-off, while Laval will host UQAM at 6 p.m. Fans are to be advised that parking around the Sir Arthur Currie Gym on Saturday will be extremely difficult as the Montreal Alouettes will be hosting the CFL Eastern Semifinal at 3 p.m. It is strongly reccommended that public transportation be used.as the McGill Metro stop is less than a 10-minute walk up University Avenue.
